The "constipation" is due to your body trying to extract as much as possible from your food along with some dehydration. On long, multi-day routes I'll not go for a poo for anything up to 36hrs.
Did my good feed for the day helping out a guy that is running inner tubes. He put a new one in after a puncture but his pump keep pulling the valve core out every time he unscrewed it. Just happened that after some messing around my pump didn’t do that.
Lezyne pump? One reason I don't use them anymore.
Thanks for the update Poopscoop. Keep on keeping on! It's only pain. You'll be over Alfriston and Jevington and cruising into Eastbourne before you know it.
We're all rooting for you buddy!
That thing you say is keeping you sane...it's not working.
You'll be pleased to know that the description of your barse woes means that we'll all leave your SDW epic with some deep scarring, albeit mental.
Hope you made it.
I bailed into Brighton. Slashed rear tyre sidewall before Amberly and it wouldn't stay up. Two worms and 100ml of sealant and it still leaks. Took the spare tube out to find it leaks and the puncture kit was MIA. 5k pump ups were really cutting into the time. At least now I know these tyres can be reseated with CO2.

Good job sir, chapeau!
👍🚴
I'm glad you're moving again, but dropping one behind the sign is not encouraged.
Whooop whoop - Well done Sir.
So is your bum like a Sarlaac pit now?
🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️
Well done Poopscoop and thanks for a good thread restoration. Glad you made it.
Well done 👌
Entertaining!!😀
Well done!!
At last! Good man for not letting it beat you. Think you deserve a pint or four after that!
Congratulations and well done!
Enjoyed reading this, and especially the happy ending. Great work!
Now your nemesis is behind you what is next years challenge? Well done poopscoop
Well done poopscoop.
Nice. Well done Poopscoop :D.
Nice one Poopy, great perseverance given previous hiccups!
An inspiration to us all.

I was the ice cream van car park random fan 😅 I was 80 miles in to a 105 mile sdw/gravel epic and wasn’t thinking too much after doing Streat Bostal and across to ditchling at full whack, but saw your bike as you held the gate for me (what a gent) and it all clicked suddenly. Great to chat to you and I, as many are, feel part of this entire journey and am rooting for you! Hopefully the trail down towards Falmer was a nice rest as it’s not too savage. Go well!
Sam
I even got a selfie 😅 #teampoopscoop
Hey! Only just read this. Was a pleasure chatting mate.lol It thew me a bit when you pointed at me and said, "Poopscoop?!". Haha.😁
If you could forward me the pic that would be great, I'll pm you my email addy later. That was a true epic you rode. No way, no way could I even get close to that! Hopefully see you guys on the Downs again one day in the future.👍

That's a real pain in the rear and no pun intended. Will you get in another attempt before the end of Summer?
Right.....
Now a few ramblings and thoughts as I can now sit down just about comfortable enough not to risk passing out.😁
Really tough not to keep constantly stopping just looking at the views and taking snaps.

Of course one of the best parts of being out on the bike is the people you meet. These three ladies are artists from varying disciplines. We had quite a poignant chat that led to a few tears being shed by us. Strange what you sometimes talk about with strangers under a panoramic blue sky.

I remembered this climb from back in 2010 when I found myself suddenly riding amongst a group of BHF riders. It was a pig then and it was this time too. I was massively pleased to make it to the top though as I didn't think I had a chance of riding it to be honest.

I think this was the climb out of Jevington, that was a real lung buster. Luckily a guy was infront of me on a ht and seeing him grinding up it motivated me to keep going and make it to the top. Amazing how much you can dig out of seemingly empty legs with someone to try and chase/keep up with on the ups.
This looked for all the world like the scales of some escaped tropical pet snake. Amazing, the variety of fungi out there.

I had a ludicrous grin when I saw this view. Beyond happy. Almost, almost there!

Things I learnt along the way...
Most people are on the whole, bloody nice.
The journey and remembering to take it all in is as important as the destination.
I rode through horse *
Cow *
Pig *
And sheep *
Yet managed to save the orange and incredibly smelly dog turd till only about 200 metres before the Kiosk Cafe.😭
Thanks for all the advice and encouragement given during the ride guys, genuinely appreciated!
Poop you are a dude (that’s my highest praise).
Please tell us that you are already planning next years adventure, and promise to keep us informed of your progress.
No plans as yet mate. The moon and the stars have to align for these multi day things to happen as I'm a full time carer usually for my mother you see.
Great effort - on the subject of poo, I've done a few overnighters / doubles and a combination of a heavy dew and sheep means you get absolutely covered - even I could smell myself when I rolled into the Tesco Express in Eastbourne at 6am one morning! Stocking up on pork pies, sat on the pavement filling my face before setting off back home for another 10 hours in a rancid fug!
^^ lol, yeah, I really must have been really offensive smelly wiser yet the only thing I could smell myself was the digs c*** at the end.
Funny how that out stinks the rest of the rancid stuff.😁
Just caught up on this. Bravo.
Just finished reading all 5 pages - a great thread, very entertaining ☺️ Glad to read you made it in the end too.
This is a fantastic read. Chapeau sir! A proper adventure.
2020 Single Day Attempt Incoming.
Reviving this thread as I've now stopped aching after riding the Peddars Way there and back.
In other words, I'm at the stage where I've forgotten the pain and only remember the fun. Selective memory is great.😁
So, I'm going to try to ride the SDW in a day. Winchester to Eastbourne direction probably.... Though having those big climbs at the end does make me wonder if going East to West might be better.😁
Anyway, posting this as now I've got to give the ride a shot or risk public shaming.
I'll have 2 Exposure lights on the bike (one on helmet) so can expand the riding time a few hours. Perhaps start not long after midnight so I can definitely finish in daylight. That would help moral!
I won't lie, as much as the toughness of the ride (for me) I'm just as worried about crashing out! I get tired and make mistakes.
I think I'll be looking at early August for the attempt.
What could go wrong?😁
👍💪 go for it. Hoping to do the same.
stay on the right on the way down the chalk from Harting Down, then cut right into the meadow (where the Chinooks play) and the next RH downhill, stay in the middle. Walk up to the cattlegrid, then its plain sailing to Amberley Mount and halfway.
If you want more details for left, right or centre, just let me know.
Good luck sir!!
Good luck, keep us informed.
Thanks guys! You, Mr @Weeksy without knowing it, have provided a large part of the motivation, fitness and weight loss for Peddars and this SDW attempt. Your Zwift thread set a few things in motion for me and some others I think.👍

I "think" I know exactly where you mean matey. I think there is still some skin I left there abouts from my legs and arms.😁
Nice one poopscoop, looking forward to reading about your adventures.
I'm doing east to west in September so looking forward to following your progress again.
Thanks lots for the compliment Scoop, i am very pleased to know i've helped in some way.
If logistics work out, i may even do some of it with ya 🙂
^^ I may well hold you up that weeksy..... though I think you'll have to allow for me bimbling along pretty slowly and in a slightly incoherent state.lol
Ok, looks like I am go for launch one day next week. Not sure on day yet though.
Excited/nervous/bricking it all at the same time. Probably shouldn't have read some old threads on here about how brutal it's going to be to even attempt it in a day. 3 days has proven to be challenging up till now...
Bike is going to be like a mobile tuck shop... with taped on gels, flap jack bars and Soreen over every tube I can tape it to.
Aiming on leaving Winchester about 3am with a little Diablo light to guide me. Was bringing the big Maxx D instead... But other than it allowing me to ride into the night to get to Eastbourne (I bloody hope I'm there before sun down....) I suspect it's just dead weight after sun up.
I'll be on same bike as last year, the Jeffsy, same colour helmet (though a new one as the old one had a few too many "tests" carried out on it...) with varying amounts of blood on arms and legs. Say hi/give me a push/resus if you see me.👍
I'm over a stone lighter now than I was in that pic...you won't notice much difference though as id lost a fair amount of blood by the time that picture was taken so it kind of equals out.
Amusingly I came upon this link earlier tonight!😀
https://www.southdowns.gov.uk/whats-the-scoop-on-picking-up-poop/
Good luck, keep an eye on the weather as it looks like the wind's changing direction towards the end of the week.
Good luck poopscoop. What bike do you need for the SDW? Could you use a gravel bike?
Thanks guys!
Yep mate, lots of people ride it on cx/ gravel bikes etc. Just depends on the "comfort" you want during the ride I suppose.lol
I've been overtaken by many riders on cx/gravel bikes on the SDW.😁
Tuesday looking unlikely now as SDW looks to be getting a lot of rain tomorrow night. Riding it wishin a few hours of that is probably not a prudent idea. For me anyway.lol
Tried one left over little pack of Soreen a min ago.... Turns out I should have tried one before decorating the bike with them as they taste like s. They look like s too.
SDW tomorrow or Thursday.
Back wind on Wednesday but not as sunny. Thursday sunny but wind a little against me. I'm torn, as I like the sun but wind assistance would be nice.😁
Tailwind over hot sun any day.
Food arrangement needs more pork pie. And you forgot to tape some Mars Bars to the fork legs.
Yeah,I think it's going to be tailwind. No point in making it harder than it needs to be. Outs going to be bloody hard as is.
Sausage rolls to be added and I had thought of taping something to the forks but held back!
I think you've thrown me over the edge now though.
Mars Bars incoming!
Mars Bars incoming!
<Thinks about molten Mars Bar, wrapper punctured by flints, oozing into his front hub.>
How about Choc Ices? Or maybe just an upturned flip-top squeezy bottle of golden syrup?
I did it last Tuesday and really enjoyed it. Have to say that I found a bag quite a good solution to carrying the food!
For the first time in months if not years, I didn't take my usual jelly babies on a planned 2+ hour ride on Sunday, but took a Sooreen malt loaf instead.
At home, I love eating malt loaf, but it was far too dry and chewy compared to the babies. I suspect it had far less Calories too compared to a bag of babies, which might explain why my legs were screaming when I got in after ~66 miles.
Good luck for the Sdw, tailwind on sunny day sounds good, as long as you know where to top up your water.
I suspect it had far less Calories too compared to a bag of babies,
Probably, per equivalent weight, at least. Also slower release, which is great if that's what you're used to.
I have not idea how you fuel a 66 mile ride on jelly babies, though. I'd be feeling terrible!
Good luck Mr Scoop!
I did the second half (Amberley to Eastbourne) last Thursday. It was fab as ever. The Saddlescombe farm cafe was open as was the YHA after the railway crossing in case you need extra rations.
Also the pub in Alfriston, but you need to walk your bike through the bar...
All taps running well.
Good luck!
Your pre-ride malt-loaf bike pic is incredible! I have never ridden fuelled with malt loaf. Usually it's jelly beans, rice bars and sandwiches for me.
Back in my climbing days malt loaves were essential, but mostly because they were indestructible.
The pic of the bike with food taped all over it is fantastic. Enjoy your ride!
And I'm off!🚵👍 3am.
good luck man 👍🚴
No offs yet, got lost near the start though, in the dark. Walked old Winchester hill.
Spectacular sun rise. Now at QECP, getting water. I'll get lost here too. Always do.😁

keep on pedalling mate.. the climb out of QECP is a bitch 🙂
Well done mate, have a great day! Keep Pedalling…
Well done! I'd love to do it one day
Good work!
Brutal day out. Done it a couple times and always regret it at about mile 80! God speed!
Good luck, weather is looking good for you. Please be careful knowing your track record.
Amberly.
Knees feeling it. Topped up with water but decided to skip village for provisions.
A gamble but it saves time.
One unintentional dismount so far.😁
Awesome. Keep at it, and keep the calories going in. Weather today looks perfect - not too hot
Nice work. Keep it up. 💪
Keep piling the food in and back off at the start of every hill and winch up with utterly MINIMUM effort.
Go and have a look at the finish.
78 miles.
Pain
Attrition
Aye, anyone who's ridden it knows that pain. Good pacing though, you'll get there
That’s good progress mate well done. Keep going. Maybe time for the mars bar now?
Keep on keeping on! As my mate says, it's only pain. But he's a bit odd.
You'll make it and the site of Eastbourne from the top of the last hill will be amazing!
Superb! Keep on
Over the 75% distance (I think)... Keep setting yourself little targets, the home straight is almost in sight!
Yeah, but alfriston, itford and Jevington are all in the way.
Still got 2hrs of daylight left so should be ok.
The dip by the a27 near lewes always gets me, and the big grassy climb up to the falmer resevoir is s killer.
The other hills, ad rob says, start really slowly and grind them out
I keep refreshing this thread! Go #Poopscoop !
Hopefully Poopscoop is now scoffing fish and chips on the beach....
my first bikepack trip was the south downs... back in 1988 ish. It all went a bit wrong... cold, hungry, but happy.
An adventure is something you look forward and back on fondly, but whilst you are doing it, it should feel like hell. If it doesn't feel like hell, you are probably on holiday, and not an adventure.
17 hours, no rest stops, just getting water and extra food.
Never again. Ever.
I'm not smiling because I really don't want to.
You sir, are a legend. Well bloody done. Now have a beer and massive bowl of chips.
