Me, I just ride my bike 'cos I enjoy it, no record of any miles kept, just let my riding do the talking, mostly when I fall on my arse.

4200miles for me, in 320hours. As with HH45 above, riding is better quantified in hours than miles when you ride more than one discipline.

Just over 5000 for me. What I expected to do but not as much as I wanted. I *wanted* to ride about 18,000.

Matt nearly did, all well documented, virtually all offroad, hilly and fast.

Agree with Dougal/others that time is a better quantification, but less good for willy waving certainly.

Not totally sure for me, as I didn't have any way of measuring it for a while, but 4524.7 excluding about 2.5 months, they were easy months though, so probably about 5000 for me, plus a hundred or so running, all of which felt harder than any of the riding!

I'm sorry George, you said that your riding takes you "25-30 (hours) or thereabouts".

Right... quick maths lesson for you!

18000 miles, spread equally over 52 weeks is 346 miles/week.

If that took you 25 hours, that's an average of 13.84mph. Now, let's allow for 20% faffing time (surely not when you're training?!), so 20 hours riding/week (which is extremely doable I know), that's an average of 17mph.

Where do the 26mph rides figure in all this, or even the 20mph rides?! And you've STILL not answered me how you find groups that go out after your kids are in bed, in the dark, and knock out 26mph. As for that being with a tail wind, do you just ride point to point!? Surely the vast majority of rides will have equal amounts of head/tail/cross winds!?

Perhaps you do in fact spend 20% of every ride with your cock in your hand waving it to all and sundry. It would explain a number of things...

Or... perhaps you're genuinely deluded.

njee20 - in the time taken to do those sums you coulda done a good few miles toward 2010's total mileage 😉

Already done 4 hours on the MTB this morning, and having ended up on my arse on the ice that was enough! I imagine it'll be a while before I get a response as he's no doubt out doing 800 miles at 59mph, having driving 3200 miles this morning.

Odd fellow.

Just over 1900 miles for me, which is about what I've done each year for the last three years. Nowhere near as much as I'd like, but life, work and family get in the way of riding.

About 5% of my year's total was on one day in September in Kielder forest 🙂

well ' surrounded by idiots' ( GL) - i kinda know how much training he does and would say he would be doing roughly that. 20 hours of cycling a week aint that much. TAke a 2 hour commute a day plus 5 at the weekend then it aint all that. I would guesstimate i've done about 12000 this year.
2 weeks commuting to work at 74 miles round trip, 15 weeks at my previous job commuting to work at 40 miles round trip, 30 weeks commuting to work in new job at 27 miles round trip. Had 1 week in new york, 1 week in malaga, 1 week in Gran Canaria, 2 weeks ill, off the bike. Done plenty off road rides close to or over 100 miles, rode on all my days off on MTB with varying miles and done plenty of night rides after work where per day i could be doing 70 miles ( including commuting) plus kielder 100, merida 135 sat and 60 sun plus pedal for scotland Glasgow to Edinburgh return @ 110 miles.

All in all about 12000k miles, possibly more

so, radoggair, find the time to do half as much again as what you rode and you'd be getting somewhere close to SBI's mileage? That's doing half of what you rode again! Puts his (claimed) mileage into perspective.

That's a hell of a lot.
Sadly my only high mileage years were up to 1992, with a weekly commute of 370 miles a week (Leighton buzzard>London) plus Hemel Hempstead club 10 every Tuesday, MK Bowl Crit every Thursday and a road race Sunday about 500 miles a week.
However with months of no racing (off season) holidays etc it only came to 17K

Bloody hell,

I genuinely consider myself a died in the wool, full time cyclist, and can hold my own (not talking willys here) over longish distances, yet I doubt I've topped 2500 miles...

I'd be very single very fast if i tried to double that, let alone octuple it! 😯

Plus, have we not argued average speeds on here before? 😉

Fair enough, firstly mines circa that amount, it prob is more than that TBveryH and o.k. 18k is alot but i wouldn't say it was difficult. This year ( once this bloody snow goes), i hope to be getting up to that amount. Its not about willy waving, but for people like me its about the great feeling i get whilst out on my bike. If i had a huge local group that biked i would easily top 20k. I'm lucky to have a great biking mate who lives nearby and apart from our weekend rides we will prob do alot more night riding this year and apart from that i dont mind doing 100+ miles on my own
I also know that SBI is very lucky to have Glentress and inners on his doorstep and rides with extremely local people so getting out on the bike isn't an issue to himself or others around him. He also does alot of road riding and he's right to say that (even without a tailwind) hitting an average of 26mph in a good cycling group is attainable.
Basically, 18k is alot but lets face it if your willing to put in the time then 350 miles per week isn't difficult at all so instead of being very negative, people like SBI should be applauded for there miles they've covered on their bike. Offsets his CARbon pollution i guess ( see what i did there)

Jesus wept! I can see how you have so much time to ride and drive, it's because you never learnt to read!

My issue is not particularly with your distance (it seems unlikely given results etc, but certainly possible), but your absurb comments about have you've done it, not to mention your numerous contradictions, and total failure to answer any questions about yourself. Who the **** boasts about their epic VO2max then refuses to say what it is. Get over yourself.

And AGAIN, where are you finding group rides that go out and do 26mph in the dark, with a permanent tail wind?

And surely suggesting that people like George should be commended for their carbon offsetting when he boasted about having driven a million miles is as hilarious as some of his comments on here?

Go njee20.

Glupton - you do make claims that you cannot substantiate and that appear ridiculous. I believe you ride a lot. Maybe half of what you claim.

350 miles a week. thats 50 miles a day every day. But you won't ride every single day - you will miss a few. Its the same as your "million miles claim. Massivly overestimated Bollox.

Technically he didn't do those miles. Do you know his profession??

Njee, it was a tongue in the cheek joke so get your head out of your arse and smell the coffee. He said he did 18k miles, PROVE he didn't. If you cant then shut up and deal with it. We dont question your claims.

And AGAIN, where are you finding group rides that go out and do 26mph in the dark, with a permanent tail wind?

Me and 3 or 4 people on here who i know could sit at an average of 26mph in the dark/rain/whatever without a tailwind all day long. Its fast but in a group it aint that if everyone's pushing it.

lol this forum has certainly amused me.

My instincts tell me that "I'm surrounded by idiots" is exaggerating massively.

25-30 hours a week? Not really racing at a high level? Very suspicious links to Adidas with no way of proof? No results to show?

If you are taking rest days with that (if you are not, then you have probably plateaued your fitness months ago and should probably take some) then you are talking averages even higher than those that others on here have worked out. That also means if you are taking time off (Christmas/winter period) they are higher still. Irina Kalentieva (World XC champion) does 18000 km a year. A WORLD CHAMPION. She is a full-time athlete and you claim to work.

I would advise either that you stop telling lies to impress people on the internet, or start to train smarter. 30 hours a week isn't even done by the pro teams and it is silly. Average of over 4 hours a day, every day? Where is your recovery? Longer ride at the weekend on top of that?

If we accept you actually do this milage and time on the bike, your fitness isn't going to be what it could be. You state your V02 in great? So you are training at threshold a lot then? Without rest days? Something doesn't add up mate I'm afraid.

Not that I am aware of. However I can do simple arithmetic and I know the smell of bullshine.

I believe you ride a lot of miles and you do it fast. I do not believe an average of 350 miles a week. Its the same as your million mile claim.

Get your head out of your arse and read my posts you idiot! I'm not particularly calling into question his alleged distance, it is plausible. What I am questioning is comments about riding 25-30 hours a week, and yet doing rides with 26mph averages, although all his mid-week rides are done after his kids are in bed. There's a lot of shit flying around here!

I love how geography has now come into it. You're from Scotland, so you're poorly educated, and a raging alcholic-heroin-addict, so I wonder if you're able to even ride a bike at all.

I don't know what the problem is here. My old commute was 37 miles each way in all weathers.
On Tuesdays I rode my race bike to work and rode the Hemel 10 before going home.
On Thursdays I met a mate in Hemel and we drove to Milton Keynes and raced there, then I cycled home.
Sundays I often did a road race of about 60 miles.
So if I did a full on week I'd clock up about 450 miles a week. Of course I didn't compete every week.
However with all that emphasis on mileage I never got higher than 3rd Cat.

Hey, less of the heroin stuff. I was poorly educated though i was brought up for most of my life ( and certainly my educateionnal ) in English schools.
You must get 2 gold stars for A/ copying my head up the arse comment and B/ hitting me with a great comeback.

2 gold stars = Obviously a crap rider then

Think that might be the problem her you are prone to statements designed to elicit a reaction [lies, BS, half truths devils advocate whatever].

You cant really be surprised that people are questioning you on this claim ?

Personally I think it is doable but I have no idea whether by the OP or at claimed averages.

Hey man, I like riding my bike. I love it. I train about 15 hours a week myself.

There is no way I can prove you otherwise, so I'll save you throwing that one at me. I haven't met you and am not making judgements on you as a personality.

I have the Peak District and Yorkshire Dales to train within, so I too have some great riding. But unless this is the only thing in your life though, its hard to believe. Do you not have other things to do, places to go, lie ins, illness? I too love riding my bike and training. But mentally and physically, there are limits. I can comprehend that other people are different to me so I'll save you saying that too, but what you are saying is mathematically, pretty ludicrous.

Either you have tremendous motivation (not sure where this is coming from as you don't seem to have any means for this volume other than 'you like riding your bike') or you are lying. Only you know I guess...

I just don't understand how guys on here can do 10000 plus miles a year and juggle it with family life and professional jobs (and STW time)! I wouldn't have a girlfriend if I did that much biking! Would never have the time to see her or do anything else as I'd be out of it. I get enough grief running/biking 5-6 times a week (she fears I'd be over-training, but luckily she's worth staying at home for ). You mega mile heroes must also spend a fair amount on bike parts, not an issue if you're sponsored I guess..... 🙂

200 mile a week isn't hard to do, seriously it isn't. Juggle it with a tough job, but the way i look at it,i sleep 6 hours a night, work 9 hours day ( i eat at work ) spend 3 or 4 hours at home, which leaves me 5 or 6 hours free for fannying about, commuting, gym, extra training plus my 2 days off. During warmer months, 200 miles in 2 days happens regularly.

I do spend alot on bike stuff but then again i dont drink alcohol ( possibly 5 occasions all last year), i dont smoke, not really into fashion per se so have nothing much else to spend money on. Ca use of the biking i only do 5-6k in my car as well, and thats mainly to get somewhere to go biking

radoggair - I would like to commute more by bike as it's a good distance (would be 37 mile round trip) but need the car almost daily during work so it's not really an option for me at present. Certainly with your commute the miles must quickly mount up, good on you for sticking to it all year round.

Fair enough re the cash to spend on bike parts, I'd have a pimpier fleet if I wasn't doing up the house 🙄

Sorry can’t help but get dragged in to this one – but if SBI is training that hard & is that serious about his surely it is structured and targeted. Any serious athlete has a training log/ dairy – riding that much without rest day is only going to lead to injury and illness – most modern training log have the facility to up load the info to the inter web so should be quite easy to evidence (I use Sporttracks, Garmin training centre – and have played with Garmin connect – until goggle updated the satellite pictures)

Think of all that riding he could be doing now, rather than wasting his time willy waving on here. Unless he's got confused and thinks that time spent typing utter rubbish on STW counts towards his total, in which case he's probably not far off is 20m miles in his own little head.

not sure exacty (Ascent is installed on my work mac and not back in the office until Monday) but I think it's somewhere between 4700 / 5000 miles @ an average of somewhere slightly north of 16mph...

(Daily commute started the year at approx 12 miles a day, finished at between 35 and 55 a day average)

@shortbread_fanylion
I was doing that before kids came along. I trained hard after our daughter was born premature, until one day I collapsed they had to break the door down and cart me off to hospital. What was left was the fat ex-cyclist you see before you today 😥
Nowadays I need the 4X4 everyday, though I'm trying to change that, and actually commuted again just before the holidays.

Strange comparison. You're certainly bitter and twisted (and also quite deranged), whereas I'm none of the above. To borrow your sad mantra - "Have we met"?

Basically I, like most others on here am a little tired of you being such an insufferable idiot. But I guess that's life, we all have to put up with idiots on a daily basis. Perhaps the mods should let rudepaddedfred back so you can both talk rubbish together in your own sad little thread.

Zokes - What is idiotic about starting a thread to see how many miles people did in the last year? I thought this was a site full of enthusiastic cyclists, so would have reasonably expected there to be a number of people that rode more miles than I did. People that come on here ride bikes dont they? Or do they just pretend they do - so they can pretend to be cool.

I'm surrounded by eejidts. You are my new hero, it used to be SIR Rannulph Fiennes or SIR Chris Bonington (Lance Whatshisname & Chris Thingy are up there too mind)but now it's you as you seemed to have achieved so much. Can I have your autograph please before you win something important. I'm now 53 yrs old & only managed something like....I dunno, 800 miles (all off road though) last year, I'm also a right flabby t*at so you give me inspiration. I'd love to meet you someday & snap your nose off cos it must be really long by now. Ta ta.

How fast can you ride a reasonably flat solo 10 miler on your road bike?

So that's 27.3 mph average then, on a road bike, not a tt bike. I am now seriously impressed. How have you ever lost a race?

On the mountain bike - no more than 100.
Road bike commuting - approx 3000
Running - approx 2500 as i had a hernia op which kept the miles down for 2 months.

Have a big year planned for the running so not much time for the mountain bike again, although it is good cross training for the running.

njee - kids are in bed by 7. i have lights - go figure. I can ride on great quiet roads and world class trails right from my door. it makes a huge difference...

I'm talking about these group rides that do 26mph average with perpetual tail winds though, not the odd night ride.

You have just contradicted yourself again though, you've gone from saying that you are training for LEJOG in as little time as possible (and obviously aiming for a quick time) and yet you're only doing it because you enjoy riding your bike!

22 mins for a 10 mile TT is nowt special.

Depends on the course TBH, there's a few courses where you'd struggle to do 22 on a proper TT bike, equally there's some where it's actually quite easy (much as I really hate to give any credence to the lies and trolling that he's coming up with otherwise...)

Having said that, 22 mins is getting into the "very good club rider" territory.

I was trying to source an average ride stat from you. I wasn't talking about a TT on a specific bike. Still 22mins is still a good time for a 10 even on a TT for your "normal" rider.
