[#1865938]

sold my Oro K18s to get some juicys, and was then put off those by negative reviews. sort of narrowed it down now to either of these two. XTs are about £25 more than the SLX.

so........me just being an average bod, i shouldnt think id be able to tell the difference in performance, so what about the other considerations?
looks, weight, ease of bleeding? cost of bleed kits? (if any)

anyoine got any negative things to say about either thatll put me off these too? 😀

cheers

yeah, thats where ive been looking.

wiggle say that the brakes are the wrong way round 'american stylee' and youd have to cut the hoses and re-bleed to sort that. is that common???

SLX ftw. Cheap, mega powerful, reliable, look good. Maybe a touch on the heavy side but who wants lightweight brakes? Just get some.

Just bought XTs from Ribble. They are the right way round, front right, left rear, if that helps.
Oh, and they cost £122 with triple discount. Still confused?

Nah, just undo the two hoses carefully from the levers and swap them over. Certainly no cutting involved.

Go xt its what i would use. Very reliable, light and easy to service if you ever have to which is unlikely unless after a year or two. Don't go avids worst brakes to bleed ever!!

The pad retention is bizarre, it requires a pair of pliers, ideally long nosed, to take out/put in the pads, so unless you're somebody who keeps their tool collection in your camelbak then pads wearing out midride isn't a problem.
I'm not sure about XT

All you need to take pads out is allen key for the little bolt. Prob the easiest brakes to set up, bleed and change pads.

Sadx: yeah, no rotors, but you've already got a few of them, haven't you?
They come F+R with 160mm IS-post adapters.

mtb-direct.com do cheap rotors and shimano adaptors same price as crc. had one of theirs on for a few years now - looks nice ( IMO ) and the brakes work. all boxes ticked! 😀

I have XT on one bike and SLX on the other. There doesnt seem to be much difference other than the colour, not really functional contact adjustment on the xts and the odd pad retention thingy. For only £25 difference i would get xts though.

SLX have a rubbish split pin to hold the pads in, XT have the neater little bolt. and are XT - which is always better 🙂

I've used the split pin in my Saints for years after I lost one bolt!

I got a set of xt's from ribble last week. Much more powerful than the older xt's they replaced, although I have had to mount them inside the shifters to get the lever feel right.
