I currently run 22t and 36t standard SLX double set up with specific front mech.
Can i change to 24t and 38t or even 26t and 40t

I run a 26t on my SLX no problem. The size of the large chainring will depend on what the bashguard is built for: As they come with a 36t chainring, then I would suspect anything large would require a larger bashring.

... I've got one of these - the 36T is in the "standard" middle ring position isn't it? I don't believe they're chainline adjusted, although I'm happy to be proved wrong.

So you need to look at the shape of the stays on your frame. It's possible that a 40T middle (or a 26T inner, for that matter) will bind on the chainstay.
