Been running a Hope BB and SLX crank for a few years without any issues. Just replaced the Hope bearings in the BB cups. Around the same time I have swapped out the frame for something new. A few rides in and the drivetrain is making some very nasty creaking and grinding noises. Tried all the usual culprits and eventually found the only way to 'almost' remove the noise is to liberally grease the spindle of the crank that passes through the BB bearings. So seems to be an issue with the cranks in the bearing. Maybe it is due to all the dust on the trails at the mo! But anyone else ever had issues with Shimano cranks in a Hope BB? Really can't understand why it started a few rides after making all the changes and not straight away. Put an old RF BB in and the noise remained, again until the grease tub came out! I would have though that a 'dry' fit between the crank spindle and the inner bearing would be preferable so the rotation is done by the bearing? Too dark to continue the investiagtion now....... time for a beer.
Did you face the BB shell old chap? Also I always grease my axles before entering the BB ๐
you should also have greased the cups before inserting bearing, the threads of the cups too. basically grease everything then do it up tight (but not the preload).
BB shell was faced and the thread of the cups were greased. No grease added between bearing and cup. Will try different cranks and BB today (once the sun is out).... 8)
not sure how many miles you did with the old setup, but maybe the axle 'ground' itself to a different alignment to the new frame?
Was it hope bearings you put in? They have a smaller ID than std HT2 bearings as they dont use top hats.
does sound like the crank axle's rotating inside the inner bearing race.
you're not overdoing the preload are you?
Didn't look too hard at the 'new' frame as I suspected the 'old' parts would be the most likely cause, but.....took bike from a cold garage this morning, no creaking or crunching. GREAT. Leaves bike in the sun for half an hour, back comes the creaking and crunching. Then recalls that the creaking stopped a bit last night, yes, as the temperature dropped. Tried completely different BB and cranks, noise prevails. Looked closer at the 'new' frame and can see a little play in the lower DW link? Riding in a tight circle, so putting side load on the frame, makes the noise worse. Pumped more grease into the links, but to no avail.
So looking like a trip back to the LBS for a discussion about a 1 week old frame issue now.
No offence but having a scientific background when a parameter is changed (the frame in this case) and the result is different than the original conditions (old frame) one usually looks to the new paramenter as the cause.
real world I appreciate that most of us think that if we put old gear on a new frame and there is a problem it's cos the old stuff is worn which is a natural reaction. But the scientific method teaches us to look at the changed variable. In the same way never change more than one variable at a time.
yes i had the same issue tried all sorts of grease.
in the end i covered the spindle with copper slip & this cured the problem.
also unless you do the bolts up EVENLY you can have the same problem
