So on Saturday I noticed that my BB spacers were moving a tiny bit on the drive side when pedalling.
I got home, took the cranks off and the DS cup came out very easily, on closer inspection of the threads on the shell, the first 4-5 are about half the size (pitch?) they're meant to be.
As an interim measure and after speaking to 18 bikes on the matter, I've ordered a Race Face DH BB as they have much longer threads on both cups which will easily reach the good threads - kinda makes sense when you're putting two spacers on the DS reducing the thread contact patch - and I'm planning on installing the new BB when it arrives.
Just wondering if it'll be advisable, or even the best (for now) way round it would be to apply some loctite or similar bearing fit compound/solution to the dmaaged thread sections?
Or if there is another solution, such as thread tape?
I've looked into getting the shell reamed, resleeved & retapped and will get that done once I've got the spare cash.
Cheers
As long as you use something not too strong...it can't hurt...I think.
I had this issue, the 2nd cup just ended up damaging the rest of the thread, ended up having a heli-coil inserted by BETD/Goldtec.
Only had it back a month but was running fine, till the fork broke....
Al - cheers for that.
z!ppy - did you put a longer BB in?
I would wait for the new BB.
Clean the threads and go gently with the new cup.
If it seats fully and feels tight, just leave it in.
When it comes to changing the bearings (next month) then repeat.
I would only put loctite or PTFE tape on the cups if it was a loose fit.
You are completely correct about needing a longer cup when you need 2 spacers....the XC cups do seem marginal at best.
PaulD
LBS fitted an XTR saying it had a longer thread, and it was fine for several months. Then started spinning, took it out to find the rest of the thread worn away.
It was/is a C'dale Prophet, and you regularly read thread about ppl having BB thread issues...
It may not increase the strength directly but should stop any movement and further damage.
Paul - to be fair I think I'm goign to be fitting longer DH style BB cups to all frames with a 68mm shell in future. MIght just wrap a bit of PTFE round the bit where the threads are slightly damaged - to take up "any" slack and see how it goes.
Z1ppy - I thought it was only the Saint that had longer threads. Just spoke to Goldtec about it.
Had well ****ed threads on a ally framed bike I bought (buyer beware). Argos in Bristol did a great job of reaming and sleeving it. Now with a steel insert the threads are much more durable than the original ally threads. I went to Argos for sleeving rather than BETD for helicoil as they are local to me and cheaper than having both sides helicoiled by BETD.
BETD are local to me, the postage costs including the insurance for the frame are massive when considering sending it to Brizzle
If one or the other are local then it is a bit of a no brainer with postage costs ๐
But then again it does mean I have to drive to Stoke ๐ฅ
