I am attempting to convert a 2009 Giant XTC into a single speed commuter to help a mate out. The conversion needs to be as cheap as possible.

I have removed everything and now in the process of sourcing the parts needed. The bottom bracket needs replacing and is Truvativ Power Spline, shall I replace like for like or is there a better alternative?

Can I buy a a single speed conversion kit like the A2Z kit and use that for the rear cog?

To keep costs down I was thinking of using the original triple crankset and just putting the chain in the middle ring but removing the shifter/mech, will that work? If not any cheap alternatives?

Looks like you'll need to use that specific type of bottom bracket, but google it.

SS conversion kit is the easiest way to go.

Triple crankset is fine using middle ring. Only issue is theย  original chainring "nuts" will be too long as you are only using one frontย  chainring, so either hacksaw shorter or buy single ring ones.

Bottom bracket : like for like replacement would be cheapest option I guess.

Middle chain ring will be ok, but youll need shorter bolts.

Single speed kit should have all you need, cassette spacers, rear cog, chain tensioner? (Or you can use a rear mech)

Guess you'll need a 3/32 chain. Current one might be ok tbh.

The triple chainring will work, but you can get a narrow wide - or just a single ring from someone like On-One for next to nothing. Cheap strong and will work better with a single speed chain. This also means you will have a straighter chain line.

The disadvantage of using a chainring intended for derailleurs is that it is designed to allow the chain to glide off easily. As a singlespeed, it may or may not do that, but if it does, it will be an eye watering experience...

So if you don't replace it with a chainring designed for 1x use, keep the front derailleur as a chain guide.

Having good chain tension will stop the chain coming off but agree a single speed chainring would be better.

Not sure if using a tensioner makes the chances higher? as in my almost 20 years of single speeding I have always used single speed specific frames and have never had a chain come off.

Doesn't need to be narrow wide as that makes no difference for a single speed with a static (and straight) chainlink and you can save money by using a standard ring.

Thanks for all the help, conversion kit and bottom bracket ordered.

Could I use the triple crankset and leave it intact, remove th mech and just put the chain in the middle ring? Would that work or is it best to remove the redundant chainrings?

If you're not replacing the middle ring with a single-speed specific one, i.e. if you're keeping the middle ring you have on the triple, the only reason to remove the other 2 rings are weight and aesthetics

The bigger ring may actually help keep your chain on
