The grips on gj juniors bike are borked. He only uses one twist grip on the right hand side. Can you buy one long and one short grip combos? If so, where from?

Yeap, look for Rohloff compatible grips. SJS do them.

Singletrack award winning 18bikes will sell you a set of Lizard Skin lock-ons for just such a purpose - 1 short and 1 normal. I bought a set from them for my 1x9 razzer bike.

+1, go for something like Bontrager XXX Lites, they're very thin, so they'll suit small hands, and have the added bonus of being incredibly light.
