Is it possible to fit a single chainring on a double setup or are they wider than the specific double chainrings?
It will fit fine, assuming it is the same BCD.
You will need to use shorter chainring bolts, or add washers. eg https://www.hubjub.co.uk/single-chainring-bolts-65-p.asp
Or fit a bashguard in place of the outer ring.
Thanks CraigW, sorry i didnt ask my question correctly. I want to keep the double setup but i am struggling to find my size for the large chainring in stock anywhere. I was wondering if i could get away with fitting a 'Single' ring but not sure if it will interfere with the smaller ring. My guess is it will.
You could probably fit it.
But a singlespeed chainring is designed to keep the chain on. It won't have ramps etc, to allow smoothly changing gear.
Also some singlespeed chainrings are designed for 1/8" chains. They won't work with a standard 3/32" chain.
What size chainring do you need, what BCD?
some singlespeed chainrings are designed for 1/8″ chains
Hardly any.
Shimano m8000 36t. 96bcd I think. I've found one on bike discount.de but I've never ordered from them.
I've used bike discount.de about a half dozen times, usually deliver when they say they will,I'm happy to use them again.
Bike discount.de are spot on, I've have no issues with them. They're cheap but postage can make it pricier than UK sellers for small orders. Worth seeing if there's anything else you need as for somethings they are very good value. I always end up getting spokes from them or Rose in Germany.
SJS Cycles have them (and cheaper Shimano variants you can possibly get to fit).
Is it for single speed or 1x?
What crankset do you currently have?
Actually most singlespeed chainrings are designed for 1/8” chain. But of course those are for hub geared bikes, kids bikes and track. Al’s correct, the Johnny come lately SS specific rings are 3/32 and I’m being pedantic.
What size do you want, that is so hard to find? Years ago road bikes in five speed ran “half-step and granny, with two very closely spaced outer rings and a bailout. This meant swapping front and back frequently rather than going up and down the back block.
I is confused!!
All the information is there, you just need to read it...
You need part no Y1RL98080 - any bike shop can order it post free for you. £49.99 RRP and in stock with Madison.
Thanks all, I have the XT M8000 cranks.
Another reason I was asking is it gives more options in the future if/when things get discontinued.
