Turnerfan1 I found it hard to even demo a Sultan, went with a Tallboy in the end, but would be interested to hear more about them.

Mine after a fair few recent upgrades mostly using bits from the classifieds. All work done myself. Wheels are the only thing I'd really like to improve. I think it's about 27 lbs at the moment which doesn't seem bad for a 20" frame and big wheels.

been riding it for a few weeks now and thoroughly enjoying it, hoses now proper length, gears working perfectly (though haven't needed to get out of middle ring yet) and fitted some proper tyres yesterday as conditions are getting a little sticky, got up at 7 today (sunday 03/10/10) and it's obviously monsoon season so it's staying in the garage.

Don't let a bit of rain stop you. Mine was up to the BB in water the other week riding between Lee and Cragg quarries. There's something satisfying about riding in those conditions. Strange thing was a guy went past us on a drop handle race of some sort at the top of Lee quarry - bizarre!

Rocketdog, thought that pic looked familiar, i was on the Worcs canal on Sunday afternoon as well. Made the mistake of taking the full suss for once (usually a summer only bike) as 2 days earlier the ground was nice and frozen. Twas a nightmare on Sunday, i had to stop at one point as my front wheel/fork brace clogged so badly i could no longer pedal.

I often do a jaunt from Bromsgrove to the Eagle & Sun in Droitwich and back as it's a nice 20 mile round trip. When it gets warmer i go down to Worcester which is closer to 40 miles. The towpath is in pretty good shape mostly, it's just the 2 or 3 miles either side of the pub that can get really muddy. You can also do most of the towpath down the Droitwich junction now out to the river Severn although work on the canal seems to have ground to a halt. I also got 3 punctures but luckily the thorns stayed in and allowed me to get home unhindered. I should learn to turn back when i see the farmers have cut the Hawthorn.

When spring comes i shall be getting out my canal maps and head off for some Midland canals all dayers - if it's dry i'll be on the Fargo to nichecore to the max....... 🙂

i rode to the eagle and sun recce-ing the tardebigge-worcs-tardebigge ride i'm planning in the spring, there and back with pub stops, passed a guy on a spotless on one pompino (how he kept it clean i dunno!) i turned off the canal and went vid hanbury-junny ring-callow hill 24 miles all told and the last 8 miles with frozen feet didn't make me a happy bunny
the black stuff on the towpath after the Queens Head (now shut, landlord gave up the licence) which is dusty in summer was just like porridge
if you ride via Droitwich to the river is there a pathway along side the severn navagable for bikes?

Nope, the towpath runs out just as you hit the Severn. Don't know if it'll change once (if) they finish the canal renovation.

I was surprised to see the Queens head shut, it's a shame as it's a nice pub in the summer (restaurant got too pricey though).

The ride to Worcs and back is fairly easy although your legs start to go towards the end after the constant short sharp climbs at the locks (30 locks in a row is the longest continous flight in Britain). Takes about an hour & a quarter to get to Worcs from central Bromsgrove (around 14 mph average - slower on the way back!).

that's the trouble with the Queens Head, reasonable trade in the summer but winter is dead, you are right about the prices though, no one has made a go of it there
