A recent dable with riding a hardtail off-road again after a year of nothing but full sus was fun but caused my niggling hip problem to return in the space of about 1 hour! So that really is it. No-more hardtail mtb for me. So I built up a 2008 orange 5 frame with the bits and had first ride at the weekend, its a fun fast bike but perhaps a "boring" obvious choice.

So show me your replacement bike if you've had to make the same decision, what did you go for to replace your hardtail with a bit of squish?

I bought an 05 Kona Coiler frame and a cheap set of bombers to make my full squisher.

Its heavy, but it is easier on the back.

Only use the HT for rides from the door nowadays & keep the FS 'for best'

Ellsworth Moment... Sadly, it's more bike than I need so I'm sticking with a Soul and a Classic Blur. If anyone wants a Mint Medium Moment, mail me. Mmmmmmmmm

OP: tried a steel or Ti frame? Tubeless and drop tyre pressure a bit?

My son is not out here until the Christmas holidays so I've been using his LP X Control. Only because mechanical things need to be used to keep them in the best working order you understand..................

Matt - yes I have ridden steel HT's a lot and still have my inbred as a commuter. Its true they feel much better than an Alu frame, but for off-road now I don't they will ever be as easy on the body as a FS. True tyre pressure makes a huge difference. Its the idea of investing in a Ti hardtail that lead to me giving the HT I had a quick go again and the same old problems returning. So I've decided to give my self a break!

Sure, just got my first non-alu HT (steel), with a ti post and tubeless it doesn't feel much different to my Blur classic for the XC riding a do, especially in the damp. It's early days but I'm sure I'll never ride an Alu HT again.

Great action/location pics on this thread ... so here's my Blur at 4300m in Peru.

(Technically this 'replaced' my 2001 Kona Kula HT).
