[Closed] Should I go 1 X11 or 1 x 10?

I have a 11 - 42 10 speed on my fatty and am perfectly happy with the spread.
My spearfish 3 x 9 will need replacing soon so contemplating joining everyone else in this decade.
Any real advantage with 11 speed?
How much weight can I expect to save and are ze Germans still cheapest?

Shift quality mostly is the difference if you're staying Shimano. Manufacturer made wide ratio shifting is better than any of the range expander options.

SRAM is lighter and wider range than Shimano in 1x11, but if you don't like SRAM that's not relevant... 🙂

If you are going to change it anyway then 11 speed is the obvious choice as the costs are so close anyway.

The only reason you'd have to go 10 speed would be that you could share parts between the two bikes if you every broke something. Instead of carrying separate set of spares for each bike. (spare chains, link, potentially shifters etc.)

Why not 12 😉 the Eagle GX prices look good!!
I'd probably say GX11 though, good range, solid build and for me long lasting.

Sram with a 10t on the cassette will necessitate an XD driver for your freehub though, so you have to factor that in.

I'd go straight to 11spd, shimano.

I recently built a bike with the Sram XG 11sp cassette (10-42t) and XT shifter & mech - which I find slightly preferable to the GX equivalents.

Would recommend that set-up.

I would really object to spending more tha £60 on a cassette. At that price an 11 speed seems to weigh over 100 g more than a 10 speed. ( slx v sun tour) Obviously CRC could be wrong with those figures.
So erring towards 10 speed. Will an 11 speed mech work with 10 speed?

Sunrace 67.50 387g 11-42

SRAM GX 74.99 394g 10-42 - All steel rings so harder wearing

More range very similar weight, few quid different.
Also future proofs with 12sp on the XD driver.

Yeah the XG 1150 cassette is worth the few quid extra IMO too, decent weight saving and durability seems excellent.

Excuse my ignorance but how does a 10 tooth work? Will it just fit on a normal freehub? Hope evo 2.
If so that is amazing.

1x11 Shimano here - XT 11-42 cassette, XTR shifter, KMC chain.

It's the nicest shifting and hardiest setup I've used. The cassette is heavy, but it's durable, cheap, and works with little hassle during setup.

Not used SRAM 11 or 12 speed for balance as I resent the price of the cassettes.

You need to pony up for the XD driver freehub I'm afraid.

May also need different end caps if QR.

Swap to an XD freehub from Hope, Allows the cassette to sit tighter on the axle. With 142x12 it was just a straight swap took about 2 mins. Gets rid of the gouging on the freehub body too.

Done many times but GX vs XT is about 10 quid at the moment? (coming up to 0.25p/km difference and it's outlasted the XT's people have had locally) I never went below XT before as it was too bad on the freehubs.

Depends how much you want to spend, and how big you want the spread of gears to be. I've just gone 1x10 with a 36T cassette for less than £85, with a deore clutch mech, zee shifter, SLX cassette and SRAM chain (all new)

The only benefit to 1x10 is cost (as above)

I have 1x11 on my HT, I like the simplicity but the range is a slight annoyance.
Have 2x10 on the FS which is almost worn out so will be trying 1x12 when Eagle GX is available as the price is very reasonable IMO.

Recently ditched 9 speed on one bike. Decided on 10 speed; 11-40 Sunrace cassette, latest non-clutch SLX medium cage mech (a great solid mech), Superstar chainring, KMC chain, saint shifter. Lighter and a bit cheaper than 11 speed SLX and less to go wrong. Use a Zee shifter as a £20 option.

I went from a 1x10 with a 40T to 1x11 42T and can't say it was the best use of ££ for me. I don't hate it or anything... just a bit underwhelmed... (and not thinking it through)

Retrospectively.... the old expander was pretty cheap and can be changed when worn... chains are more expensive (and wear faster) and shimano wise the i-spec B shifters are hard to come by cheap in 11 speed

I hardly use the 42 (can't say never but it doesn't really make any difference over the 40) ... which might be good because it's part of the assembled cassette ... and effectively I just gained a 11T instead of a 12T... (as I didn't add a 15T instead of just removing the smallest)

I could also just have increased the size of the chainring though.

The biggest "loss" for me is just cross compatibility though.
I have 3 bikes I maintain that were all on 10 speed shimano and SLX/XT brakes.... so I'd usually have 1-2 spare chains (whenever sales are on) and such and can always pull a part off one bike and fit it to another.

Equally though at some point I'll need to upgrade or be left with hard to find parts... I already downgraded the BB due to the new smaller HT-II and not wanting a new/extra BB tool....

I just bought a similar set up to chakaping with GX cassette, XT mech and shifter, KMC chain and new SLX cranks with Uberbike 30T N/W and a second hand XD driver for £300. Was thinking of going for Eagle but would need to keep the XD driver so would still be an extra £160.

The 30-42 gives the same ratio as 32-45 and the 30-10 gives a slightly taller top gear than the 32-11. Eagle obviously betters both those with a 32 but not sure I need it or is worth it for me at the mo. Would also want to sell the crap looking GX Eagle cranks which is more faff. Only complete groupsets available to pre-order according to LBS

Dunno what it's like yet as halfway through fitting it.

Anyone want a 1x10 XT setup with near new derailleur with rad cage, 11-36 cassette with 42T OneUp expander, cranks and 32T Superstar narrow wide included for £70 posted? Cassette won't take a new chain (2.5k on them) but still working fine
