Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get a 34t narrow wide chainring to fit shimano 105 (5800) cranks at a reasonable price? Looking to build up a bike for my son, mainly from the parts bin. Want to go 1x up front with a 34t but thhe only 34t narrow wides I can see online that will fit are Wolftooth and they are very pricey. Anything more affordable out there?

Many thanks!

Why would you need n/w on a road bike?

Good question, any unpinned/ramped ring would do unless it's going to get thrown around a lot...

Thanks all. Found the superstar one and that looks much better.

For need for nw - I thought that was what one did for 1x, and certainly want to make sure the chain doesn't come off hitting bumps or during sprints in races.

Ta.

No worries.

For ref, the special thing about narrow-wide is greater chain retention over rough ground, possibly at expense of chain life.

'Single ring' rings (ie, without ramps and pins) existed before NW, and basically just have taller teeth. They also hold chains well although maybe not as well on rough ground.

People tend to forget that the whole reason chains drop on multi-ring mountain bikes so much is that the rings in a shift system are *designed* to drop the chain - if they were designed to hold on to it, derailleurs would never be able to cause the chain to fall off one ring ready to be caught by the next... E13 G-Rings are a good example of a 'single ring' ring and aren't expensive (anymore)
