Looking for some suggestions for a rear tyre that can cope in gloopy mud but can also cover early season XC races?
Although it's probably a bit overkill I've got a Magic Mary on the front which is great, but a pair of them would kill any speed!
Anything "mud" related will kill your speed. You can't have both. How muddy are we talking? I wouldn't bother for the odd patch and if you need a mud tyre for XC I wouldn't bother with the race in that case.

Buy a Rocket Ron, then move it to the front as the ground dries up. I raced a Storm Control F Rocket Ron R this December not for the first time in some quite poor conditions,
Dual ply 2.6 minion, at about 15psi
Specialized Storm Control would seem to fit your bill. It's fairly light, it's narrow and tubeless friendly. It won't shed clay mud (South/Wiltshire Downs) when it's at it's worst but good for general winter slop.
Spec storm control, bonty mud x, maxxis beaver
