Hi Chaps,

Does anyone know if the new M785 levers will work with the older M775 calipers? I've got a pretty new set of M775 brakes, but the diaphragm has started to leak, and is also pulling air in through the master cylinder.

Given the disposable nature of Shimano parts, I thought £33 for a new M785 lever might be a a good option.

should be fine. Just use the original hose and connect it up to the new lever.

Saw them for £25 at cycle junction. (never used them)

Yep, I've done this. Works brilliantly (in fact, I actually prefer it to the pure set of M785 I have on another bike)

Do the levers come with the connection bolt? i.e. to screw into the lever and hold the olive in place?

I know I'll need a new olive and insert, just not sure about the bolts...

i can't remember if they came with the bolt or not.

I swapped from the M775 levers (had broken the lever clamp) so just used the bolt that I already had.

You should also be aware that there are 2 different barbed inserts for shimano now as there are 2 different hose types. 785s use 'high power' hose (smaller internal diameter) so need a silver insert. All older brakes use the larger internal diameter hose and a gold insert. The olives are the same.

I'm using old hose and gold insert with new levers, works fine.

Ah I see, so the new hose = the new BH90 insert.

So just stick with the standard style insert and olive.

Looking at the prices I might just go with the XTR levers, it's about £35 more expensive, so not too bad.

Cheers for the help Dave, Shimano are quite poor with their technical spec documentation with regard to backward compatibility.

Good spot there.
Just to note, new style Shimano levers don't sit that well over shifters with indicator windows installed.
I changed from 775's to 785's & ended up changing to windowless shifters to get a better fit.

Did you get the tyre clearance pictures BTW?

If you're not cutting the hose, surely you should be able to just plug it into the new caliper?
Or are the hose nuts different?

like most plumbing compression joints, the join seals because of the deformable olive. You might get it it seal if you're lucky, but for the tiny cost of an olive, you're better off getting a new one in there for a guaranteed seal.

Any pointers where to get the levers cheap?

I smashed up an XT775 lever on my DH bike & was going to just replace it like for like, but if I can get the newer ones cheap I may as well, if they are a straightforward fit.

You could just buy a new reservoir cap and diaphragm. Just need to find the pdf online to help the bike shop, but they can also find it out online.
I just got a set for my old xt disk brake via my lbs. Cost me £6 for one lever including postage for them to get it from Madison. I ordered it 4.45pm and the shop rang me lunchtime the following day.
