Shimano M590 DS hub flange failure - expected life?

Hi, some routine maintenance on my wife’s Surly LHT turned out to be a bigger job than I had expected!

Noticed the brake was rubbing and checked the rear wheel, turns out two spokes had come loose as the hub flange failed so wheel dish had changed. Wheel is a M590 36 hole hub and 26” Sputnik rim, it’s had a pretty fair innings as I’ve put new rims on it twice over the years since I built them.

Does it look like a fatigue, corrosion failure or spoke tension? Thought it was interesting as I’ve never had a Shimano hub fail before, so hadn’t even thought about them not going on indefinitely.

Fracture surfaces look very clean, so a fast failure I'd say. If it was cracks developing over time, you'd expect dirt to leech in, making the surfaces dirty. Hard to tell from a small photo though.

Has your missis developed a love of the massive huck to flat recently?

I don’t think so, or at least she is keeping quiet about the new “roof drop” commuting route she’s be doing this year…

Will ask again as she is normally quite proud of doing random rough road bits or pothole narrow escapes 🤔

I had that on an old hope mono  hub .....circa 10 years old at the time.

Isn't 590 about 10 years old..... Fatigue ?

@trail_rat - Almost, built up about 7 years ago just when we moved house, so pretty much there. Hub was on the third rim that was scheduled to be replaced in the autumn as getting concave.

Made me realise for my bikes I’ve never actually gotten that far, either bought new fancier wheels or wrote them off completely before the 5 year mark (car hit my commuter a couple of weeks back for example).

How many times has it been trued ?. Possibly too much strain, or even too tight initially until a knock pulls it too far and crack.

@dyna-ti - technically only three times, once when built  and the two replacements. Never needed truing in between.

I used a Park Tool spoke gauge when built up, using a “known good” wheel from a builder for reference with the same rims/spoke. I know they aren’t super accurate but are alright for relative comparisons.

Other half has not fessed up to doing anything to break it recently, so I’ve swapped in a cheapo spare one to tide her over until the new one from Spa arrives in a few weeks.
