Am thinking of converting my race 29 HT 1x11.
I've got a Hope Pro Evo 2 Hub - so I guess I could swap the freehub to an XD Driver (right?) - but my thinking was to keep it simple and use the standard freehub, and XT 11 speed cassette.
I run the same drive train on the plus bike and for the most part it is great but miss the top end speed on downhill sections. As such, I was thinking of going up to a 34 chainring instead of 32.
to compensate at the hill climbing end - was going to get as 11/42 cassette instead of the 11/40 that I have on the other bike.
Any experience as to whether the gear inches at the climbing end will be comparable? or likely to be too tough?
Any users think the jump from 37 teeth to 42 is too big a gap?
Thanks
If you're worried about the step then look at the Sunrace cassettes - slightly better increments between gears.
SRAM cassettes have wider range, are lighter and last longer (that's comparing GX to XT)
I'd have the GX cassette, especially on a race bike, although shelling out for the freehub is a pain. That said, I reckon it's a better design than the standard freehub (as long as you grease it before installing the cassette)
The jump to last sproket is there on both SRAM and Shimano 42 cassettes. It's a bail out gear, it never bothers me, but I'm very much winch up to ride down

Don't think so - you can only convert the Pro4, no?

No, although it's 5 teeth it's only an extra 13% ish which isn't much more than the jump between 11 and 12. I have 11-42 and it's bang on.
As to wether or not it'll be enough - that's up to you, how strong you are and how hilly it is where you live - and what kind of riding.
I have 30/11-42 on my XC bike and it's pretty steep around here. I can climb all our stuff without too much bother but I can't do it in a comfortable zone so every ride includes some high intensity. I don't miss the high end because I'd only use that on tarmac descents and who cares about going fast on those? It's plenty for tech riding.
how about an oval chainring, on my lefty 29er i'm running 34T oval and an 11-46t XT, which will be replaced to a sunrace mx8,
how about a 36T oval chainring and a 11-46t sunrace, that'll cover your lowest 32t/40t gear and give you more range at the top
Oval isn't for me. They make me feel slightly seasick!
I'd second the 11-46 Sunrace cassette - have been running one (on a Pro2) since last summer and it's run better than the Shimano 11-42 it replaced, plus I went up a size on the chainring too.

I rode 11/42 for a while and it all seemed pretty seamless, but I'm a block shifter, I rarely go one at a time. 11/46 is more obvious, but it's a winch gear.
Hope do XD freehuibs for both Pro 2 Evo and for Pro 4 (different part numbers)

OK.... I drunkenly ordered the XT 1x11 and press fit BB.
2 questions.
My Hope Pro4 hub required a spacer before I added an 11 speed cassette.
Do I need a similar spacer for the Pro2 hub?
My bike is BB92 - the BB covers 89.5/92 - I assume I need to add the included spacer to the drive side of the BB before installation. Is this correct?
Thanks!

Don't think so, as they're 10 speed. See what it says in teh box when you get the cassette.
32t will be fine up front on a 29'er, on a DH section if you can spin.
At 90rpm you're at 37kph, at 100rpm it's 41kph, at 110rpm it's 45kph and at 120rpm its 49kph.
Thanks @ steve_b77 - i thought that was the case for the Pro2.
Any ideas on the BB spacer?
