[Closed] Shimano 10 speed compatability

I've been using an 8 speed set up on both road bikes for the last few years, one has an old battered square taper crank (currently held on to the bb with beercan technology) 'bout time it got replaced tbh.

I've not paid any attention to 9 and 10 speed advances over the years and have totally lost contact with whats compatable with what.

Are Chainsets 9 speed only or 10 speed only?

Will 9 speed be replaced by 10 in future?
or is it somekind of higher spec alternative groupset that'll run along side 9?

Thanks!

If you are thinking Shimano, then the 10sp situation is very tricky-the early 10sp systems had some interchangeability with 9sp,but the 2010/2011 stuff has been radically changed and there are all sorts of compatibility problems if you mix new 10sp with anything else...for instance different front indexing, different cassette splining, even a different brake pull.'Tis a nightmare.
Will 10sp replace 9sp ? Well 9sp won't disappear completely -you'll be able to get lots of stuff for years and years, but inevitably the choice will diminish as time goes by,just as the choice of,say,8sp cassettes is a lot less than it was 10 years ago.
