Why are sram PC970 cassttes only £20 on crc ?
XT one is still £45 plus
Whats the deal ? (other than the sram one)
PC970 is two tiers down from their top of the range (PC990), so it's not on the same 'level' as xt. IIRC PC990 is about the same weight as XT, so 990/XT would be a better comparison.
970 cassettes are equivalent to deore/lx level.
but then its a cassette. so just get it. who needs xt level?

Indeed. £45 for a cassette is crackers. If you keep an eye out you can do a full drive train (Chain, Cass & 3 chainrings) for under £50. That's what I do. 🙂
Which chainrings peter?
Cheap cassettes are fine unles you run a rear hub with an alloy freehub body then the cheaper cassettes (non-spidered ones) rip the freehub body to shreds.
hmmmm well just order one and a HG73 chain for £35
Just to check I looked at wiggle and it was over £70 for the two
I know they do deals on different things but wiggle seem to be way over priced in comparison
I find expensive cassettes still rip freehub bodies to pieces...

Chainrings - Deore. Full set, unused of the chassifides £22
Cassette - Deore. Unused of a mate £15
Chain - Cheap Sram £12-ish, maybe less.
Full set, under £50. You just have to keep looking, and when they crop up, buy them and chuck them in a drawer for when you need them. 🙂

And yet nothing rips a Shimano freehub body up, thereby reducing costs even further. 🙂
I emailed hope about using a PC970 on a proII and they said it was fine and would only cause cosmetic damage.
I love XT cassettes, the weight difference and the quality difference, and the appearance are so much nicer. Or at least they used to be some years ago, not shopped recently.
indeed again. seen some marked bodies but none 'ripped to pieces'
its not exactly a condom is it? does it matter if its not perfectly smooth?
Cant say iv ever really noticed and damage other than cosmetics and my wheels set is starting to age now (old hope bulbs with the five bolt discs)

If it gets too bad, you'll have a job getting the cassette off, and there was a pic doing the rounds of one hub body with a HUGE slot in it.....
I use the cheap cassettes on an alloy Pro 2, never had a problem. Im not the most powerful rider mind.
I do the same as Paul, Shimano cheap roadies (about £20 on CRC) on Hope hub for my DH rig. I rarely spin the pedals so the drivetrain sees a bit of abuse. No issues at all, hub's still in good nick despite being several years old.
My solution? put a bit of welly in when you install the casette in the first place! If there's no play in the casette it can't move anywhere and eat your hub.
For me the best balence of cost/quality/weight is the sram 980 cassette. Around £30, xt weight and comes with an alloy carrier so its easy to remove.
980 is much more comparable to SLX, both having spiders on the 3 biggest rings and being of similar weight, whereas XT and 990 both have more like 5 (and being of similar weight)
SLX (hg80) can often be found for less than 980 and I think its lighter, so its my current 'choice' to stay away from 1lb weights of non-spider 11-34T casettes, not pay XT prices, and have something that won't eat my freehub body
that leaves hg61 (non spider, '10 deore) or older LX about equivalent to 970 and hg50 to 950 (older deore) perhaps?
I didnt realise slx's had a spider. Not much in it weight wise though...11-34...xt 295g, 980 305g, slx 315g.
