Seat height indoors...

[Closed] Seat height indoors/outdoors? Different?

When using my HT indoors I run my saddle about 4-5cm higher than I do when outdoors. Possibly even more, maybe 6-7 actually.

If I try and keep at that height outdoors it feels like I can't even reach the pedals, let alone ride properly.

Anyone else the same?

No, that seems utterly bonkers.

When using my HT indoors

I think I can see what you're doing wrong.

I have to change mine from the turbo to outside. Only by 2mm though. Feels completely wrong if I don’t.

Are you riding indoors without a riser levelling the front axle to the rear axle on the turbo?

Yes but I have a big 2.35 Ardent on a 29er wheel fitted. If you compare that to the usual 23c+ riser then it's about the same overall.

I can't just go out and leave my 10 year old alone, so I turbo.

How odd!

High stack pedals indoors with a lower stack saddle and big platform shoes compared to outdoors? 😆

Legally. You actually can.

what exactly is it you're you protecting a 10yr old from while you pedal your bike on a stand inside the house?

Same bike, same pedals, same shoes, indoor or out. Just if I take outdoors in turbo height it feels like I need to grow 5"

I'm not generally a high saddle kind of guy outdoors on my FS either compared to some but weird I find it low if I try it indoors at the hejght

Link me up. Never seen actual figures.

Sometimes he's not even here, he goes out to the park. But he could be 4 minutes or 3 hours. If he comes home and I'm not there that's just wrong. (Plus he doesn't have a key yet)

However you phrase it, for me, it's not acceptable to go out riding at these times. I'm not protecting him per se, just being a parent.

I think the idea is that you quote the law that makes it illegal. It's hard to find laws defining everything that IS legal after all 😉

FWIW, geex is correct.

Shoot, prove it.

As I say, it's irrelevant anyway.

Not sure how that makes your legs 2-3" longer—but then I've never ridden indoors, maybe you get taller indoors. Thinking about it, I've banged my head on doorframes loads of times indoors but never outdoors, so I guess it makes sense.

If what you say is true and you need to lift your saddle to ride it on the turbo.

It suggests your riding around with it too low when your outside.

Shoot, prove it.

The only proof is if you go and read the entirety of UK legislation. It's online, knock yourself out. If there's nothing in there which says you can't leave a 10 year old in the house on you're own, there's your proof.

I guess that depends on the context. Too low for optimal power, maybe, but outdoors isn't all about power is it. There's comfort, body position, rocks, roots etc. We're not talking dropper posts here but say 5cm. But yes, for making the best/most power you're likely correct

You’re asking evidence for something which doesn’t exist.

Well as the statement was 'legally' then surely there must be something that states an age either way. If not an age, a terminology. Otherwise we may as well call it 5 years old or 16. Both could be equally right or wrong without any figure.

https://www.gov.uk/law-on-leaving-your-child-home-alone

The law doesn’t say an age when you can leave a child on their own, but it’s an offence to leave a child alone if it places them at risk.

Use your judgement on how mature your child is before you decide to leave them alone, eg at home or in a car.

The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) says:

children under 12 are rarely mature enough to be left alone for a long period of time
children under 16 shouldn’t be left alone overnight

Why? Laws only state what you can't do. The default is that you're free to do what you like.

Both could be equally right or wrong without any figure.

Well, there you go, you've answered your own question. Leave a 5 year old asleep in bed while you're in the potting shed for fifteen minutes and it's probably fine; leave a 16 year old at home all night with a fridge full of lager and a chip pan to cook their tea in and it's probably not.

"Link me up"?
"never seen actual figures"

OMG! Modern life is so devoid of common sense it absolutely astonishes me.

instead of worrying about your indoor saddle height you could just slam it completely and go outside and play in the street.
Pissing about having fun on a bike infront of the house or sat in a cupboard covered in salty moisture dressed like a gimp?
Your choice. 😉

But no, you actually just are a complete tosser.

A gimp? This surely can't be the same geex who last week said "Do you realise resorting to namecalling in an otherwise adult discussion makes you a dick"? 🙂

Erm... are you sure it's name calling Bez when black lycra does actually make middle aged men look like gimps?
Or just observational humour?

It's your life ride with the sa5me where ever you like.

But if the turbo session is to make you fitter for outdoor riding then surely it would be better to ride in your outdoor position?

Are people really letting this little bit of gold slip by unnoticed?

Back on topic, I don't alter my saddle between indoor and out but given how quickly the old chap drops off to sleep, I wonder if I should (and yes, very carefully measured height compensation for the front wheel).

If you aren't getting the bottoms of your wheels level on the turbo the whole shape you have to make to fit the bike will be different to how you ride it outide.

Pedal and shoe combination might make a difference .

With a 5cm difference that pedal/shoe combination must involve some old Gary Glitter cast off’s !!!

I definitely run the saddle lower inside over outside.

As has been pointed out, if you are riding indoors to get fit for out doors then surely you should have the same saddle height for both.

5 cm is a massive difference
