Morning guys,

Before i decide if buying this Spearfish frame is a good/bad idea, i need to know some facts i'm lacking in...

My Giant comes with standard HT2 BB and cranks (SLX)
Even though the BB's are different, will i still be able to swap teh cranks over ?

HEadsets ? i've got a tapered fork on my Giant, i assume the Spearfish will allow this according to waht's written, but will the headset swap over ?

They're the only really complex potential issues... well, the only ones i can think of.

I'm looking at the Spearfish you can get adapters that press into the BB30 and allow you to use standard cranks and BB, I think this is what you need.

What giant do you have? might help us answer your questions better.

There is another alternative for the BB, by a PFBB30 BB and then by Problem solvers adaptors to fit your cranks, but this is not only more expensive (given you already have a BB) but its a bit more of a pain to fit. Dont fret about the price of the adaptor, just factor it into the frame price.

actually, that frame comes with a PFBB30 BB installed, so you could just get theses and your SLX crank will fit.

I have a 2011 XTC 29er currently. Looks and is this one.

http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-GB/bikes/model/xtc.29er/7876/45527/

From what i can see i either need adaptors for the BB or a BB30 crankset. Also a headset, or use the headset from the Giant if compatible. All the rest of the things i should be able to swap directly over. (Maybe a seatpost)

Buying a BB30 crankset isn't necessarily a non-starter as i may build up the Giant as my commuter tool.

What i would like to do though is go single ring on the Spearfish if possible ? (Middle ring). Using a chain guide etc and not running a front mech at all. No reason other than, because i can (if i can) and because it looks more tidy. The Giant will eventually become my XC bike and distance bike for long XC events and will run multiple rings to allow tha.

LAstly.... if anyone thinks this is overall a bloody stupid idea.... please feel free to tell me now 🙂

The logic behind this frame swap is partly for Passportes Du Soleil and partly as my AM bike for UK stuff at Trailncentres. If you think i'd be better sticking with the Meta55 i've hired (25% deposit paid) for PPDS and just usng the Giant at UK riding, then letme know, i'm always open to being told "that's a stupid idea" if it's a stupid idea.

Ok, it looks like the headset should fit, tho the proof is in the fitting obviously. My main concern there tho is the headtube on the giant is very short, might be worth measuring your forks to check they will be long enough!

Seatpost in the Salsa is 31.6 but i run a shim and a 27.2 so any size will fit if you can get a shim.

Single ring is also a possibility, there is a nice build-up review here with just such a set-up...

steerer length is indeed a potential sticking point as 29er sus forks are not cheap at all.

Quick measurement on the steerer length seems to be 175mm.

Well it will be better than a hardtail and people use those for PPDS so im sure YOU will be fine, bike will take it no bother tho. The SF can easilly take 2.4 tyres too, so nothing to stop you running some bigger rubber for more comfort.

Ok, just ran out and measured my Large Spearfish (same as on Ebay). It come out at 130mm headtube, Hope taper headset (~13mm), 5mm spacer, 40mm stem, = 188mm. SO...

What stack height is you Giant headset?
On a hope you can lose the top seal to gain 3mm (did that on previous bike, no issue)

Double check your steerer length.
Check what your stem height is (Mine is an OVAL, 40mm height, needs around 35mm insert)
Check how much steerer you need in said stem to be safe.

I reckon id be happy with 175mm personally, but some might find it a little too close for comfort. Failing that, on-one have cheap reba's (and you fox will easy sell s/h for more than it would cost to buy the Reba's!).

Just spoken to a UK supplier and the heatube length is 130mm. (for large frame)

The Giants is 108mm, but i have plenty of spacers taking the adjusted length to 135mm.

So yup, my forks should in theory work perfectly in the frame.

I spent a long time thinking before i bought this bike, i was quite concerned that the bar height would be significantly higher than my old 26er, in the end it is a bit higher but not a lot and im reasonably happy with it tho still messing with stems/spacers when i have time. Im quite pleased with the ride too, had a yeti asr before (same suspension) and it feels very similar for XC but on rougher stuff the bike does move around more, tho the 29er-ness takes the sharp edge off any hits. It climbs amazingly too, especially over rough ground. My first ride of the bike was actually at the STW weekender... on my first practice DH run! Yikes! It did well tho, getting my in the top half, mixing up with all the high-fiving AM guys with Knee pads (they seemed upset their TurnerDW ultrabling was getting beaten by a clown wheel).

Stangely tho ive not managed to take any good pics of it yet, here is what i do have tho...

Hmmmmm not looking good to be winning this one...

Threw a few bids at it and we're up to £450 posted... add on import duty etc, we're at about £550.... getting to be a bit expensive and more likely to not bother now.

Weeksy, i've got a Pressfit adaptor for PF30 to HT2 if you decide to get the spearfish, I fitted it to mine with XT cranks but then decided to get a BB30 crank
