There are quite a few forum members hailing from the calder valley and likely to know or have heard of Dougie.
I was told on Tuesday that he had lost his battle with the illness that was only quite recently diagnosed.
He ran D C Mansfield Cycles on New Road, Mytholmroyd, a proper old fashioned bike shop cum shoe repair cum anything else you could probably need emporium. He was an avid cyclist and a true character.
I am advised that upon his diagnosis, one of his targets was to witness the Tour de France ride past his shop.
Very sad news indeed and my deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Dougie's funeral is to take place in Mytholmroyd, Monday 16 June at 2:00pm.
Dougie was an absolute legend in mytholmroyd who sold and maintained most
People's mountain bikes in the early years, the great man spent many hours putting my wheels straight
And flogging me cheap kenda tyres until I could afford his physco IIs with red tyre walls!.
Many a time I turned up to find him shut......, no problem, you just knocked on his house door and he would sort you out.
Was absolutely gutted to hear of his sudden passing (courtesy of Cape asbestos co !), I am sure tomorrow's service will be huge.
Rip Dougie.
Nice words rag.
I went to the funeral and it was standing room only. The church was rammed.
Some really nice eulogies and indeed it was his brief stint at acre mill when he was 16 that led to his illness.
