RX glasses - Tintin...

[Closed] RX glasses - Tinting the "wrong" lens - is it an option?

I've just had yet another set of RX insert riding glasses (cheapo jobbies again) glazed for next to nowt... This time however the glasses only came with a clear outer lens, and although you can buy more tinted outer lenes for them, I'm half considering either getting a second insert glazed with a fixed tint lens or even a "transitions" treated insert, obviously a clear outer lens with a tinted inner will look odd, but then wearing RX glasses always looks a bit "Special" anyway...

So other than aesthetics can anyone come up with a compelling reason not to try this?

Other than asthetics no reason not too unless you use v high index (the meterial they are made from) they should be easily tintable or transition friendly

Why not get over to Optilabs or similar and just get some riding glasses that are RX? I've a pair that have the adaptive coating, and they just work. less distortion at the edges, no misting and (so far) nary a scuff or scratch in three or more years or riding and sailing.

Another thing; is there a huge price difference between tinted or transition outer lenses (which are not RX) and tinted RX inserts?

Apologies in advance for questions-rather-than-answers. If you use the Adidas system and want lenses or inserts, let me know - I have spare pairs of Gazelles and Evil Eyes that I simply don't use any more.

Because I already have a set of RX riding glasses as I stated in my first post, but they are clear/clear lenses only at present, the basic purpose of the excercise would be to have a cheap inner lens tint done as this probably works out about the same (if not cheaper) price as buying a tinted outer lens, and functionally would work as well...

Addidas?!!!? we're talking alot cheaper here matey, I'm not made of money...

Basic tinted prescription lenses should only run to about ~£20 max, spare outer lenes won't be far off that, so I'm tempted to try the tinted insert just as a trial...

Thus far the whole setup has only cost me ~£30 or so for some reasonable fiiting lightish prescription riding glasses... I think we're talking different leagues of spend....

I'm basically a Myopic cheapskate...

I think I follow you. And I love the Myopic Cheapskate 😀 I'm -6 to -6.5 with astigmatism, so I tend to get stuff that works, rather than stuff that's cheap. That said, I used insert RX glasses from Eassun and Adidas for a good ten years or so.

I managed to get a pair of Gazelles with insert (no RX) on the 'bay a few years ago for £15, and a further £20 for the glazing. They seem to have gone up in price since, mind. 🙁

A few arguments for getting the tinted external lens:

* you can swap them out during a ride (of course, yiou swap between the tinted and untinted RX inserts)

* If you scratch the tinted outer lens, the lenses are cheap. The RX inner is likely to be more expensive to replace

* Different tints for different light conditions. So, for example, I used a dark tint, clear, yellow for low light and polarized for sailing, where the light conditions are pretty harsh and the polarisation sometimes helps with spotting the breeze.

* With the heavier tints, you look like you're wearing sunnies, not like you're about to go and interfere with the livestock at the local petting zoo.

I'm not sure if those are compelling reasons, but what the hey. I still would suggest stumping up for some proper nice ones from Optilabs. I found a pair improved my riding far better than any £180 part I ever bought for a bike.

My last RX glasses came with a full set of 3 outer lenses: Clear, Dark Grey and Persimmon/Yellow I only ever really used the Yellow and the clear for MTBing (in and out of tree cover or night riding) the dark got used exclusively on the road bike... TBH the Yellow was handy but I don't think I really needed it, a good clear lens is fine at night, so I'm thinking a darker tint really just for sunnier days on the raod bike would make sense...

I'm only -2.5/-2.25 but we're both well in the "Acceptable range" for most cheapo reglaze services, that's what I'm tending towards these days...

The other Idea I'm taken with at the minute (unrelated to these glasses) is getting one of these universal RX goggle inserts, I've got a pair of L-frame I used them for years over my glasses for DH, but they sort of fell out of favour when I started using half decent RX glasses, I'm thinking the Goggles with a drilled lens and insert would make far more sense and save the glasses from possibly getting smashed up on a DH track, anyone used these?

Right - I used goggles over normal specs for a while, and frankly, they're a PITA. The issue is with the double glazing effect of having ones set of lenses inside another - I always ended up getting misted up. Granted, modern goggles probably have better airflow inside than the stuff I was using ten years ago, but it was a faff.
