And fatal/serious injuries down by 30%.

Interesting. Given most folk I see still drive up to 30, I wonder what enforcement would do (anyone know of any fines having been handed out?).

I have never heard of anybody being fined. I have also only ever seen about three people (OK four then) observing the limit. Perhaps it is due to all the road works and traffic jams?

The drop is to be welcomed though I would be cautious about reading too much in  1 three month comparison in one city.  Scotland wide fatal and serious RTAs go up and down following a general downward trend.

2009 2094

2010 1902

2011 1851

2012 1898

2013 1588

2014 1671

2015 1577

2016 1603

With even national figures swinging by a hundred and more each year I would like to see at least an annual comparison for the Edinburgh 20mph scheme before taking anything from it.

my experience is that a significant minority of drivers have slowed a lot and are more courteous to cyclists

Most folk I see still drive at 30

Yeah but they're the "god's gift to driving"/too important types who were previously probably doing 40 in a 30, so 30 in a 20 is an improvement at least...

As above. People are speeding but they were speeding before, at least now they generally observe the old limit.

They've started enforcement in bristol and apparently that isn't fair:   https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristol-woman-who-nine-speeding-1263439

Probably got as much to do with state of the roads, much easier to avoid the potholes at 20mph.

I've noticed a minor slowing of traffic in Cardiff too, again probably due to previous 40mph-ers now doing 30, (apparently, this is pretty much the effect they desired and expected). It may also be unconnected, but in studentsville, where I work, i've also noticed quite a rise in pedestrians wandering into the road without looking first (and if the reaction of the one I stopped for, then blew my horn to wake him from his dreams, is anything to go by, not caring in the slightest).

There's a mix around us, but enough people sticking to 20 to slow down most of those wanting to go faster.  And as stevenmenmuir says, the state of the roads makes 20 seem ambitious in some places.

Possibly as well.  Someone stepping off the pavement into the road without looking is a daily occurrence.  Students heading to KB a particularly suicidal group.  Mind you, they also seem to be the biggest sources of cycling ninjas (dark clothing, no lights) so perhaps self preservation isn't a strong point generally.

Interesting guys(/girl 😀 )

Some of those commenting state that a separate study is needed to see if there's a genuine link.

That Bristol woman is great.

"It's not fair blah blah blah, everyone does it blah blah blah and I can't even go on a speed awareness course as I was recently caught jumping a red light".

I think she needs to go on a general awareness course!

That woman from Bristol is incredible!

"I just feel really gutted. I don’t think it’s fair I’m being penalised for something everyone does"

Doesn't matter how you feel. It is fair.

"I do respect the 20mph limit but no one drives at that speed. It’s so hard to drive at that speed."

Clearly you don't respect it. Plenty of people obviously do drive at that speed. It isn't hard to drive at that speed. 100% wrong - impressive.

"It’s really disappointing. I feel the system isn’t there to help people like me".

Disappointment is a point of view. I'm not disappointed. You are correct that the system is not there to help you break the law - well done for getting something right - but I find your lack of understanding worrying.

"I’m made to feel like a criminal for doing something everyone does"

You are a criminal.

"I know it’s not okay but I’m going 26mph. It’s going to destroy my business".

A non-sequitur and self contradiction in so few words - impressive.

"I’ve never had a point on my licence and I’ve been driving eight years. Eight years of careful driving now I’m being penalised".

Seems to be contradicted by the red light point below.

"I know what I did. I know no-one is going to listen to me".

Second correct utterance - I suppose monkeys and typewriters and all that. Makes me wonder why you are actually going on about it, though.

"Ms Allan said she did not have this option as she was recently caught driving through a red light".

Face meet palm.

Cretin.

The comments are pretty good reading as well 🙂

I think we can reasonably call her an idiot.  The evidence is not on her side.

welcome news OP. I hope they continue to monitor the benefits and it is used to drive adoption in other cites

Uh-oh; clearly more research needed into the overall effectiveness of 20mph zones.

My own experience echoes that of many others; speeds in places seem to have gone down (the 40+ drivers seem to be nearer 30mph) but the number of cars pulling out of side roads right in front of you and pedestrians stepping into the road feels like it's increased massively.

There has been some enforcement, presumably in little bursts at "hot spots".

that's good, I thought I was the only driver doing 20mph but there must be others. Taxis and audis still struggling with the concept though.
