I've had some coil u-turns for about 6 weeks now and I just can't get anywhere near full travel despite rocky downs, jumps and drops.
They have standard spring and I'm at the upper end of the rs weight range when kitted up. I thought that they just needed bedding in when new out of the box but I've done plenty of riding on them now, local in the Peaks, couple of trips to Wales and just finished a week in the Lakes (walna scar etc). I'm still only getting 110-120mm max. For info that's running minimum compression, slow rebound and no floodgate in an attempt to get a little more travel.
Going to give Fishers a ring on Monday when I get back from the Lakes and probably send them back but just wondering if anybody else has had this problem??
i experienced the same thing with my mates Lyriks over summer. standard spring, me weighing ~72kg all tooled up and found that even on big hits the grime-line was always 30mm away from the top of the stanchions.
to be honest, it doesn't bother me. either i'm too lightweight or the fork doesn't do what it says it'll do, but the longer fork gives me a more relaxed steering feeling.
If I'm on the upper limit of the standard spring and the fork is not reaching full travel on a big downhill, then something is wrong.
esp as these forks retail for nearly £900.........working just okay is not acceptable.
Rik - what do you weigh? Dont believe the standard spring figures. There is another thread running about this.
Check out MTBR forums they all go on about this some people running standard up to and over 100kg.
I picked up some 2008 Lyrik u-turns in the spring and have found the same. I'm about 85kg with kit and as far as I'm aware they have the standard spring. According to the dirt rings on the stantions, I don't think I've ever used the last 20mm, even though I've been riding Whistler bike park and North Shore black trails.
However, I love it. Just like Alpin, I'm still happy with slacker steering and I absolutely do not want it to dive through all of its travel as I fumble my way through a slow, techie section. Due to rider ineptitude, that fork has saved my bacon on a number of occasions!
There is a modification that you can make to the floodgate - see here....
Apparently this allows you not to ramp up through the travel and bottom out if you are using a lighter spring.
Obviously this only applies if you have a MISSION Control and not the Motion Control which is a less functional damper unit.

Cheers guys I'll have a look. Hmmm.... That might mean £50!! for a new softer spring. That just a bit sh1t.
Btw - I'm about 80-83kg all loaded up.
Should have bought solo airs 😉
Eat more pies 😆
Try the lighter oil approach first might loosen it up a bit.
Or just the right amount of oil, I've heard it's normal not to get full travel if there is the wrong amount.
Personally I have a solo air. I had a similar problem of not getting full travel, until after about two months I'm suddenly using it all. I think it was one bigger drop that slammed something in place. 😀 A friend mentioned that there is some kind of bottom out protection that could easily be slightly out of place and cause that kind of symptoms, maybe the bigger drop moved it in place?
I'm about 80kg with all gear etc - I have got a soft spring and the bushings have been sized (little tight as standard). I still don't bottom out on rides but can just bottom it out if I wind everything off and smash it off a kerb drop with tight arms.
I did have lack of full travel when they had too much oil in them but it feels like an early bottom out as it hydro locks.
My guess would be slightly tight bushes if they still come like that and too hard a spring if you want full travel. Do you know anyone that you can borrow a soft spring from?
Cheers Matt but even with the new spring it's cheaper than solo airs.
I've had mine for nigh on 12 month n the buggers have still not given up more than 100 mil. I smashed 'em to pieces in the Alps yet nothin' would shift 'em. I'm no lightweight neither. They're booked in at TFTuned next week so I'll repost when I'd have chance to give 'em a good hammerin' on their return. If they still don't work I'll be chuckin' em in the sea.
Think I'll see what Fishers say on Monday.
I am no stranger to stripping forks but will see what the importers say first.
As soon as i bought them i fitted the "correct for my weight" firm spring in my coil U-turn Lyriks and found i was never getting more than about 120mm travel.
I serviced them after a few months. Changing the oil and lubing everything improved the suppleness and reduced stiction but didn't affect the amount of travel i was getting
I ended up putting the "as it came in the box" medium spring back in and they have been much better. I now get 145-150mm travel but with no bottoming out, even in the Alps.
So don't hesitate to try a softer spring if thats what you feel you need.
I took my Lyrik equipped Banshee to Whistler last year: I sent it to TFT to be serviced before I went and got it back and left it on the settings they gave me.
When I was in the Bike Park I was only getting around 100mm of travel: When I noticed it I mentioned it to one of the guides and he said that they often come with oil that is too thick to allow for adequate adjustment of the compression settings (don't ask me why). He then suggested I take off all the compression, both LS and HS: I tried this and they were absolutely perfect.
Rik,
Mine were suffering stiction terrible, I tried everything (oil weights, oil brands, greases the lot!) In the end I sent em to TFT for a service and he swapped out the main oil seal that sits under the wiper seal for 2 foam rings. Made a massive difference to my fork, I even tried a firm spring as a result (I'm around 90kg's loaded) but it was too firm.
From what Tim said this is standard on the Boxxer (1 wiper seal and 2 foam rings) which makes the super plush, just need to service them a bit more.
I have had this mod done for a year now and have serviced the about forks 5 times, just had to order some more Flooks Fluid!
I would have a look at this mod as it's cheap and easy, all you need is 4 x 35mm foam rings for a boxxer.
*thread resurection*
Has anyone done else done the mod konastoner mentions? What parts do i need - anyone point out/link to it please?
I had mine done at TF too Rob. Definitely made a big difference to their stiction. We should be able to get the bits on for you too.
I had mine serviced at TFT I had pretty much full travel out of mine, 95K in my gear standard spring, in the Alps they definitely bottomed out, on the Plenney run,and on some of the more severe DH tracks i wandered onto, mine were 2008 model, coil u-turn, fitted to my Heckler. Speak to the guys at TFT they carried out some mods to mine, to improve them.
Matt can you find out prices please
I get full travel from both of mine, even though I use a stiffer spring than Rockshox recommend for me. (60kg and medium) I don't bottom it out regularily mind, takes big hits to do it, which it seems to me is as it should be 😉
