After trashing another stans alpha (the older lighter one) I am wondering if I should replace with something more robust.

Is anyone using these?...how is inflation, strength?

Are there any other rim-only options or rim strips?

New stans alphas are a bit burlier

I know, but burly enough?

And only 25gm lighter than A23s but nearly twice the price...

I'm running A23s at the moment, with Sapim CX ray spokes (24 front 28 back), but clinchers rather than tubs (I wasn't aware they did a tubular version...). Light and stiff, and a revelation after the Bianchi/ Mach1 rims the bike came with. I usually run about 100-110 psi on 700x23c which works fine for me but I guess rider weight & style is also a factor (I'm 60kgs and not exactly a "power" rider... 😉 )

I've got some A23's on the way - not intending on using them tubeless though, but might consider it in future. Us roadies are totally ignorant to the whole tubeless malarky.

I've run taped-up ope pros in the past, but the obvious choice is the A23.

I'm getting some new wheels for the commuter soon so I'll probably use the A23s without a machined sidewall (disc-wheels). Not sure on hubs yet.

I tried on Open pros, didn't really work, I want something more reliable.

Why no machined sidewall? (I didn't realise there was a choice)

just a cleaner look, as I run discs on my commuter.

Fulcrum do their Racing 0, 1 and 3s as two way fit which will run tubeless. I've a set of Racing 1's and find them excellent. Not as light as the Stans, but very stiff and look cool, which is the main thing, right?

No, and I need a rim only.

Genuine question, not trolling: what's the advantage to tubeless on the road? I mainly run them on my MTB to stop pinch flats and thorn punctures, neither are particularly common on the road (round here, at least).

They do seem to roll better (subjective), the rims were lighter (if fragile!), and no thorn-punctures.

No

Pft

I need a rim only.

Sorry, missed that bit. Out of interest, how are you trashing your Alphas? Pot holes? Crashes? Not enough spokes? FWIW I've not heard anything bad about the A23s.

1st one - low speed "off", drink involved 😳

2nd - hit a kerb in a puddle, snakebite on tyre and bulge in rim sidewall.

I'm not sure if a normal rim would have been better (prob not for 2nd). At 80kg or so I may be pushing it.

My interest in road tubeless has been piqued by a friend who has done 22,000km since November last year without a single puncture.

You'd hope they'd be burly enough i.e. you'd think they'd sorted out any issues with the mk1's.

Ive just got some, cant notice any flex, or at least none that causes the rims to rub on the pads.

I only got them cos I got some insurance money.

I think there's more in it weight wise aswell, Jon at JRA quoted me some weights for the velocity rims. 455g is what he weighed the A23 at (this was painted I think though, anodized should be 10g or so lighter)

plus you can run them at lower pressures = better feel and grip, but without the risk of pinch punctures and they still roll well. What's not to like?

Fulcrum Racing 1 with Hutchinson Atoms, over 100 ml per week and i can not remember ever puncturing.....
Never, ever going back to Tubes !
Lets hope i can say the same for the new cross season 🙄

Just built up some A23s (32 spoke, non machined side walls) as I've put discs on my cross/winter hack. Bought because I can tubeless them but wont until my current rubber is shot. In comparison to stans rims I've built up in the past these built up nice and tight quite a bit easier (I've always found stans prone to tacoing easily if the spoke tension is not super even if you build them tight). They are also pretty wide - I've put tough 28mm durano tyres on them and they are massive on the A23s.

JRA built me some lovely wheels with A23 rims (running tubes tho), used for commuting, bimbling and touring.
Seem to be pretty strong and give a 25mm tyre a really nice shape.
Still nice and round after commuting through the lovely smooth roads of cumbria 😉

I think I'll just get another alpha, a new one, A23 @ £53 vs £85 for the alpha and I still have a matching pair.
