Hello I aquired a road bike the other week for commuting, the 105 front shifter had stopped working and before it stopped the owner said it felt very heavy and just went click - and was dead.

now i read up on the net that 105 front shifters from 08/09 all have this problem so i bought an ultegra shifter cheap off crc and with it all fitted it feels heavier than the back shifter

is that because its a front mech or because 105 mech are heavy or the shifter is faulty, bit too noisey and heavy for my liking after being used to x9 on the mtb?

I guess it feels a bit stiffer than the rear but it's doing more work so to be expected, not something I really notice though (you tend to use the front a lot less than the rear). If it's really stiff though then sounds like dodgy cabling or front mech. Does the trim work on it?

whats the trim? (sorry)

the front mech was my first bet so i gave it a good soaking and clean, the spring is indeed very stiff and the shifter does feel light when not connected

i cant really see more than 1 way the wire could be run so it must be right as its all sat in correctly ect

its not the going up that scares me as much as shifting down it clicks once small then you do it again and it just slingshots the mech back with a loud clunk (its not hitting the stops) it just feels a bit brutal

kinda paranoid of wasting my cash on the shifter if it breaks like the previous guys 105 did

/10 (10 being stiffer than stiff) my front is about 7/10 and the rear which is normal is id say 3/10

It's designed so that everyone else knows you're bottling it on the climb.... 😀

(sounds fine to me)

Trim is the half-shift thing (moves the mech slightly without changing gear to stop chain rub when using cross-over ratios). Had a problem with my front mech a couple of weeks back (suddenly started throwing the chain and not changing consistently after months of working fine), changed to Gore ride-on cables and problem remained, changed the front mech and it sorted itself and the trim now also works much better than it ever did. I'm sure the Gore cables help to as even when it worked before it was never as good it is now.

If there's nothing obviously wrong with it (and doesn't seem to be from your posts) I'd get a new Ultegra front mech and see if that helps, if not at least you've not wasted much money :p I had the 105 front shifter issue myself but it's been fine since changing to an Ultegra shifter (apart from the aforementioned dodgy mech).
