With road bikes, if you're inbetween two sizes, is it usually better to go for the larger of the two and fit a 10mm shorter stem perhaps, or go for the smaller and fit a 10mm longer stem?

Just wondering, seeing as every bike I sit on I seem to be inbetween a 54 and a 56, but the 56's usually come with stems that are 10mm longer than those on the 54's as well as a 15mm longer TT too... So an inch extra reach.

Have you done much road riding ?

I've ended up comfortable with half to one inch longer reach than I started off with, even though I don't ride muh (actually bought a bigger frame in the end)

Depends on other factors IMO - body proportion, preference, HT length, seat angle preference etc.

Done a bit, but I'm not into full on arse up, head down race position.

That said, 56's usually have a VERY tall head tube by the looks of things, usually 20mm or so taller than on 54's...

Think ill try a 10mm longer stem on my current bike before doing anything drastic.
