Am I the only one who gets up and goes out for 3 hours on the bike without eating anything. Maybe a glass of water before riding and water in the camelback while out on trail. I've just got back from a 50Km hilly road loop and I specifically took a couple multipack cereal bars with me to eat halfway around but I don't even think I needed them at the time. I do have quite a lot of excess weight though so maybe I'm just using reserves.

I have a light breakfast of cerel and green tea an hour before riding.

Also I take energy/e;lectrolyte drink rather than bars.

I'm taking 2 bars now as I find I drink too much fluid!

Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm going out for a run for an hour, prefer to do it on an empty stomach. If it's for a ride of an hour or more then an hour or so before I go out it'll be a bowl of cereal, four slices of toast,a banana & a couple of cups of coffee....

If I go for a ride on an empty stomach I tend to take energy drink, more as a preventative than because I know I'll blow.

Zaskar: how can you carry enough fluid to drink too much!? I have the opposite problem, did 4 hours MTBing this morning and drank about 250ml.

I need to eat before, else the watery contents of my stomach end up trail-side after the first big push. I keep trying though!

Surfr, if you are taking 3 hours to do 50k on the road, you're not trying hard enough to use any energy!

Last saturday having had nothing to eat since an early breakfast after five hours and some hard riding for some reason I thought I could clear the ford just before skiddaw house without slowing down. Now this is not a normal thought for me as I have yet to make a succesful crossing of anything watery in nature that would be considered to be the slightest bit tricky. In my minds eye I saw myself halfway up the hill on the other side as I approached the ford hands firmly off the brakes. Having come to rest after a rapid deacceleration I find myself on my side with a very unpleasant sensation in my knee. Fortunately I had not sustained serious injury but it hurt like hell and I generally felt like s---t. Then I realised I was feeling light headed and proceeded to demolish a cheese sandwich followed by a banana followed by a snickers bar. Felt a whole lot better, knee still hurts though.

I'm good for a decent paced 3hr+ ride on water alone as well.

I can, and for a long time did just ride on water for hours. But with age (only 24 mind) It certainly helps to have something mixed with it.
Rode 21 miles SS off road today on a Double cheeseburger and a bannana power bar. Ate some cereal before that too.

If I just pootle - fine. As soon as my output really goes up - I have to troff titbits virtually continuously or I feel like cr@p.
