Anyone else using the Aeffect cranks (24mm spindle) with Shimano BBs had problems with the axle removing the driveside BB seal as it's pushed through?
It seems the axle on my new crankset may be slightly oversized girth-wise, compared to others I've used (Shimano and RF). It also tends to remove the NDS BB seal when I take the cranks off again.
This is with the older style silver BBs, probably the SLX model. I tried it with a few BB cups to confirm it was an issue.
I owned a pair a few years ago and had a similar issue. I ended up just persevering and using a mallet to knock cranks on / off, when everything was tight, this would hold the seal in place. Not sure if newer style BBs are any better, was probably a similar BB to you that I was using, this was about 3 1/2 years ago
All raceface cranks drop this across all BBs. My 24mm in ones did it over hope, Shimano and gusset BBs and the 30mm ones do it as well. I have bought a number of second hand cranks that have come with that spacer still attached. TBH I do not at it as an issue as it means the crank did the BB properly and the seal is good.
This is actually my third set of the Aeffect cranks and the other two are a notably tight fit, but don't seem to remove/damage the BB seals in the same way. I'll have to check what BBs they are actually.
The issue, if it is one, is that once the seal is removed it's very easy to deform or crack it while trying to get it off the axle to refit. I actually fit this new set a couple of months ago and one of the BB bearings was already screwed as the seal must have been damaged.
Worked out what the problem was when replacing it last night.
We have 2 sets of older Aeefect's, which have been in and out of Hope, Shimano and Race Face BB's no bother.
Also have a set of Aeffect R's, which had been in and out of Shimano & Race Face press fit BB's fine, however I fitted them to the wife's new bike with newer BSA XT and had the same issue.
I just held the drive side seal with my fingers and gently tapped the axel through with a rubber mallet. Only 4 rides so far but seems ok.
Yes - same for me fitted a RF Aeffect R to Shimano BB and found it best to hold the drive side seal against the bearing when pushing or tapping the crank through.
Also found that the little cover that comes on the splined end and some grease aids the....ahem....penetration, which is probably what it is designed for.

Ah, pretty sure the new one is the Aeffect R.
Yes, I ended up holding the seal in place as I whacked it with a mallet, but it took a few goes to get it right.
Perhaps I can find a bit of tubing of a suitable diameter to brace it with, might try with an old seatpost or something.
