Hi there, first post on here, so apologies in advance. My Maxxis minion dhf 60a that I've been using as a rear tyre has split in a few places in diagonal lines on the side walls. I like the combination of this on the back and a supertacky on the front, but this is the first time I've ever had this problem and wonder whether it's because 1) I'm using a front as a rear tyre or 2) maybe a double ply would be better?

Does anyone have an idea whether these are the causes, or a suggestion of a good alternative that would work nicely? The front tyre is still fine.

Thanks!

How old is it?
Where do you ride?
Is it rocky?
Is it HT or Full Sus?
Do you ride smooth or like a maniac?
If it's new, rocky, HT and or maniac then try Dual Ply. I have some Fat Albert 2.4's that are OK or maybe to HRII

Certainly not a problem using them on the rear, its a known thing.

Rear tyres usually get hammered as they just follow where you point the front, so end up catching on rocks etc. As mikewsmith says.

Could be as above, or if there are lots of diagonal lines made by the treads showing through and these have progressed into the splits that you describe then its to do with the tyre folding over/flexing too much in corners etc due to too low tyre pressure.

Are these splits random or follow a pattern / parallel? Like threads in a really big weave in a fabric? Just wondering if its the plies.

Thanks for the replies! I realised how late it is. I have a mmmbop, ride in beacons/cwmcarn/wye/dartmoor, I sometimes ride like a sack of potatoes, and the tyre is not that new, but otherwise was in fairly good condition. The splits are diagonal and are at places where you can now see the weave in the sidewalls, at regular intervals around the tyre. I guess from the replies that a dual ply and higher pressure is needed.

Thanks

It's like a cross hatched pattern on the sidewall? That's the mode of failure for all my Maxxis tyres, generally after they've been used for ages. Low pressures accelerate the appearance of the lines IME. I think it's the sidewall flexing and the weave of whatever's in there showing through.

I run mine tubeless and know that when those lines get very noticable it's time to change.

Yes, the weave is showing through in diagonal lines all around the tyre on both sides, to a greater or lesser extent. I assume that the rubber over the top is thinner at these points and has eroded away, but at these lines in about 4 places the tyre has split right through, to the extent you can put your finger through.

Strange thing is I swap tyres to commute, and only noticed this after a Cwmcarn loop yesterday so all the splits must surely be in a short space of time.

From what Doug says it sounds as if even better Maxxis tyres suffer the same problem after a while.
