[Closed] Replacing an old Five

I've currently got a 2008 Orange Five that I really enjoy but I would like to replace it with one that fits more modern 'standards' which looks likely to be a 27.5 wheeled one. I'm finding the drop on 27.2 dropper post too short and getting good straight steerer forks is nearly impossible.

There's a lovely Five29 frame in the classifieds but that would mean new forks & wheels...

So, anybody ridden both a 29 Five and a 27.5? Is the 29 much more stable but less maneuverable?

Never ridden the 5 but my XL Hightower is the most manoeuvrable and capable bike I’ve owned so a 29er isn’t necessarily less manoeuvrable than a 27.5.

That’s what I’m hoping from a 29 wheeled Five. I haven’t really been impressed with the couple of 27.5 bikes I’ve ridden but that could well be the bikes & not the wheel size!

I moved from a 26" 2010 Five to a 29er Orange Alpine, I've never regretted the change.

I found at first with the 29er I actually had to ride it properly, like proper technique it to corners etc, you certainly couldn't be a lazy rider. The 29" wheels have also saved me numerous times. It does steamroller the ground a little but in a good way, I no longer stall on little roots that I used to.

I've ridden 27.5 bikes but I love my 29er, in fact I must commented to one of my friends the other week that when I ride it , it feels like the bike is part of me.

Have fun riding whatever you chose. Oh mine is a 16" and weighs in at 13.8kg and it's not even built to be light, lots of Hope on it.

I had a 26" five and moved to an Alpine 5 (29er)  which to be fair was better suited to my size/ lankyness  The thing was simply a rocket ship in a straight line  but nowhere near as nimble in the tight twisty stuff .  Also ridden a five 650b and the alpine 6 ( as the 6 lads i ride with are all Orange fans)  The SIx is simply brilliant the five is ok  imho .

I dont ride an Orange now  I like being the odd one out  but my 650b bike is better for me anyway than the above

I've got a 2016 Five 27.5, fizzy orange, amazing condition that I'll be putting up for sale.

I've had both the five29 and the 27.5 five. Preferred the 27.5 for the geometry, it's a little more maneuverable, and a bit more fun.

Pop me a message if you're interested, I've got frame and I've got full build kits too...

I went from a 26” 5 to a 5 29 and then to a Segment. I have also tried a few 27.5 5’s. 29” for me, they are better 95% of the time. If you plump for the 5 29 you won’t regret it. 27.5 is also good but I prefer that size for my ht.

Wouldn’t go back to 26” now.

An Orange Five is a hard bike to replace, but in the spirit of recommend what you've got, it might be worth trying a Banshee Prime if you get a chance.

I had a 2012 Five which I loved, I couldn't see me ever replacing it. It did everything I wanted, just how I wanted it to. Then I had a go on a Prime and loved it. Rides surprising similar (especially considering it's a 29er), but it just seems to want to go faster everywhere. Much faster, usually.

I kept the Orange thinking I'd enjoy the occasional blast for a change, but it never left the shed again! Eventually I stripped it back for parts to build Mrs Pz's new bike. The frame's still kicking around somewhere...

I have a 2007 Five, which doesn't get the use it did in the past mainly due to riding mates not riding MTB anymore or choosing to go out on the road instead.

I'm reluctant to put a lot of money into a new bike that might get two rides a month in a good month, but I'm realistic enough to know I won't be able to find size specific spares forever.

I also wonder whether 27.5 is 'different' enough to warrant the change or at 5ft5in a 29 would be a handful?

I do still enjoy riding it when I get the chance and wonder if it's worth selling now while there's some worth in it (shocks and forks very good condition) or run it into the ground and when I can't replace anything go for the very latest 'standard' to avoid this whole thing again (for a while at least).

?

Thanks, I really need to try one and will hopefully get to demo a Stage 5 later this year if I can get to a demo day.

I'm hoping I can run my 26 wheels in a 27.5 frame for now and upgrade over time. For some reason I quite enjoy slowly changing the bike as you ride it until its perfect!

The current Orange 5s are low - if you're planning on using 26" wheels and forks then be prepared for a lot of pedal strikes!
