Does duct tape work for rips etc. or does it just come off every time in the wash?

you can get some 'special' gore repair patches that work quite well.

or maybe sail repair tape.

Duct tape is probably only a temporary fix, tbh.

Try this

http://www.mcnett.com/Seam-Grip-Seam-Sealer-Outdoor-Repair-P133.aspx

there is a tape product on there. To be fair though I have used real Duct tape on a tear on my Endura jacket and it lasts well. It's certainly gone through a few washes before failure. I recommend tape in both faces.

Not tried the stuff on the link as so far happy with Duct tape.

Ive got duct tape on my jacket and it's been there for 3 yrs and 15+ washes. The grey shiney outer comes off eventually, but the woven/adhesive part stays intact.

Good option for a permanent repair is to stitch it (possible need for a fabric patch depending if it's just a clean-ish rip or not) and then to use a tube of seam seal to work into the stitching afterwards to waterproof it.

Seam seal is also great for toughening up stitching on gloves, rucksacks, etc. or for adding your own 'grip dots' to glove fingertips.
