[Closed] Removing LX Hollowtech cranks

Hi all, I'm doing a major service on the bike, stripped everything, new cables/outers, front disc upgrade etc. Not going as well as it could ๐Ÿ™„

Anyway, I have a new middle chainring on order, but can't find the relevant instructions for removing my crank.

It is the Deore LX Hollowtech, probably from around 2004 if I remember correctly? I can get a 10mm allen key in each end, but can't figure out of all I do is turn that and teh crank taps off? There are no pedal clamp bolts, no dust caps, nothing else that I've found irrelevant instructions for on the web!

If it is just a case of using a 10mm allen key, are they normal right hand threads? This was the ONLY job the LBS did when I bought the frame (bottom bracket and crank) so I don't know how it went together. I built the rest of it myself.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Normal threads for the mounting bolts, but you'll need a crank extractor to push the arms off the BB axle.

They'll be Octalink by the sound of it(right hand thread on the bolt), once undone you'll need to use a crank extractor tool for ISIS/ Octalink cranks(not square taper), thread it into the crank arm thread that's hidden by the bolts, then tighten the centre so it presses on the axle and pushes the crank off.

Martin, if you're unsure, email me direct (email in profile) an ill explain it and show you what tools you need
It's not hard but of its what bigyinn and I think it is, you'll never get it off without the correct tool

Alternatively, if you're anywhere near Farnborough, Hants I'll do it for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

They might be self extracting - I had some that were from around that time - they might have been XT.

Thanks for the help guys. I went out and tried it this-morning after reading your replies.

It is an octalink (I guess, it has 8 splines). I removed the mounting nuts with a 10mm allen key and they didn't self extract. Then my mate turned up and said he had a crank extractor (which I said wouldn't work), but when he got it we did a bit of messing with sockets in the hollow tube (leaving the none chainring side on) we got it off easily with the extractor.

Wouldn't have worked it out without the help, so thanks.

And thanks for the offer of help Peter, I'm in the North East otherwise I'd have popped it round. Cheers.

Bike now ready for a ride tomorrow with new cables, chainring, front wheel and disc brake ๐Ÿ˜€
