[Closed] Removing a stuck seatpost with caustic soda ... Quick question ....

Tomorrow I will be embarking on dissolving the remnants of a seatpost stuck halfway down a seat tube ๐Ÿ™„

Seen the videos on youtube and have a good idea regarding what to do.

One thing isn't so clear and that's what do do with the caustic soda afterwards .... Essentially the black ooze.

Any suggestions?

Also any useful pointers from previous experiences would be most appreciated 8)

Did mine with Coke. Was impressed it worked.

Don't forget to tape up all the holes!

It's sold as drain cleaner, so I tipped mine down the kitchen sink.

down the drain here too. Did mine with a weak solution and just left it for a few days in the garage then changed the solution and repeat.

Thanks folks.

I was planning a 2:1 ratio and hoping to have it done in the day ๐Ÿ˜•

2-1 caustic soda powder to water? even the other way round, that's potent.

open some windows and be sure to add water to the soda - or is it soda to the water.. hmm

I did my dmr. Added soda to the water. It gets hot fo shiz.
It took ages really but eventually got the whole thing out.
Washed it all with a hose down the street drain.

Just be very careful not to get it on your skin or in your eyes - it really is dangerous stuff.

If you put too much in water the heat released can boil the water and you get nasty alkaline fumes coming off. - don't breathe that in!

I'd try Coke first.

Household ammonia worked on my Klein when it had a post stuck in there.

This is about 75mm of post that's been cut off and shoved down the ST.

It's gotten stuck at the first of the ST mounted bottle cage bosses.

It needs to be properly dissolved ๐Ÿ˜ˆ

I use the stuff at work and as said above be very careful its bad stuff if not taken seriously.

Also when you've washed it away be careful of any white powder or crystals that may be still present the moisture in your skin will react with it if you come into contact with it.

Can't wait to hear how it goes tho please keep us posted.

I've bonded an alloy post into my steel frame ๐Ÿ˜ณ was planning on sorting it...one day...
