I'm wondering how each of these compare when it comes to suspension characteristics. Are there any good resources out there that describe the effects of reducing fork travel as opposed to adding volume spacers?

Two different things, adding a volume spacer won’t reduce the travel, it’ll ‘stiffen’ up the air spring giving it a bit more mid stroke support and ramp up at the end typically. What are you looking to achieve?

Different things really. Set the travel you want to get your desired geometry. Add or remove spacers to make it more progressive or more linear once the spring is set right.

Chart of standard spacers per rockshox fork at any given travel. Start here then go up or down to suit.
