Looking to buy an Android tablet as a Christmas present & know nothing about them, any recommendations welcomed. Also is the smaller 7" screen to small?

Any killer deals out there?

Thanks in advance.

Hard to look past a Nexus 7 - Does everything you could want at a great price. Is the screen too small? Depends on what you want to do but I find it fine, I dont really bother with my 10" tablet anymore.

2nd the Nexus 7 here. Bought one the other month and its superb. MacBook is in the corner gathering dust. As for it being too small I wouldn't say so. Perfect for gripping in one hand whilst typing in the horizontal position.

I used to use the wifes 10 incher (tablet of course 😉 ) but since I got a 7 incher of my own (Nexus 7) I haven't touched hers.

Borrowed a nexus 7 from work and it seemed the business. 10 is better for photo viewing but 7 seemed a good compromise on portability and usability. Teenagers loved it. in no way did it come over as a value product it just seemed great. Although weirdly 13 year old doesn't want one for christmas she' going for a Nintendo 3d Xl to replace her old Ds that died

Great screen, good 3 D graphics for games. Proper folder structure so you can drag and drop from a PC. Something Ipad owners can only dream of...

If you want cheaper than a Nexus, we've got our eldest an Arnova 7f G3 for Christmas. Only issue is that it comes with a slightly altered install of Android ICS and so doesn't have proper links to gmail and the Play Store, but there's an app in the store that will sort that ( http://www.arctablet.com/blog/featured/arnova-7f-g3-ics-custom-firmware-google-play-root/). Only had a brief play with the tablet, but I'm impressed, and it's about half the price of a Nexus 7.

Nexus 7 for sure if you're after simplicity and easy access. The kindle fire HD has a much nicer screen due to how well they are calibrated, but have an Amazon focussed UI.

I use my Nexus for everything other than long emails or anything that really requires a mouse or keyboard.

Buy one from PC world and they'll insure it against accidental damage for £3 a month.

If you buy from Google store, you need to actually be in the house to receive the package. If you're not they won't leave it with a neighbour, it'll just end up at the depot with TNT. For me that was offer a two hour round trip! And you can have it delivered to a different address. Bonkers really.

Picked up a Galaxy Tab2 10.1 from carphonewarehouse yesterday for £195. £50 cashback from Samsung direct so sub £150 seemed a pretty good deal. Screen isnt as good as a Nexus 10 or Ipad but then its less than half the price.. Seemed a little s;uggish at first but with the jellybean update its pretty slick.

Just had a Nexus 7 from work, Christmas bonus.

Haven't touched the laptop since, screen size is fine and makes my One X+ feel like a mobile again!

I'm trying to decide between Nexus 7 and Note 10.1
It will be my 1st tablet and mainly used for browsing, and reading kindle books.
My main concern with the N7 is that I'd end up saying, "I'll need to look at that on the laptop" which then renders the whole small light and portable thing a bit useless.
The note seems to have a similar spec but lower res screen, is that something anyone in the real world would notice?
I woud like to use it to look at photos and the occasional film but I'm not the type to sit there and count the pixels etc

Help please my xmas pressie depends on you the STW massive!

Dear god man, don't buy the Note - it's crap.

I had an Ipad3, nice enough but I don't like iOS so I decided to give the iPad to the mrs and buy myself an android equivalent. After much looking around I bought a Note, mainly for the s-pen feature and the side by side working. The thinking was the s-pen would be good for quick notes, photo editing, plotting viewranger routes etc etc.

I'd read that the Note had poor build quality and resolution but normally reviews tend to massively exaggerate stuff like that so ignored it. The build quality wasn't up to iPad standards granted but it wasn't too bad, certainly I could have lived with it. On the plus it was very slim and light and the front facing speakers are a nice touch and made quite a lot of difference.

The downsides:

The resolution is crap. Not just "crap compared to a Retina screened iPad 3" crap but "crap compared to an etch-a-sketch" crap.

The s-pen was temperamental at best - I could use the equation thing and draw but it hardly ever switched to text input correctly. It worked ok as a stylus for general clicking etc but that's not the point.

The side by side windows only works with certain apps - you can't use an aftermarket browser such as Dolphin or Chrome with it so my dream of browsing and taking notes is sadly unfulfilled. (#firstworldproblems)

And the resolution was crap.

So after about 4 hours of ownership I arranged to send it back (Tesco Direct customer service is surprisingly good) and bought a Nexus 7. Much better in every respect and I've found the smaller size to be much more useable than the iPad it replaced.

Well, if you're worried about size, I've gone from an ipad 2 to an ipad mini and much prefer the smaller size. My wife, who wouldn't touch the ipad 2 now sees the point; I suspect she'll want a Nexus 7 in the new year.
