Looking for a rear guard for my hardtail. I have read endless reviews this morning and still can't really decide which to buy... I bought a front mud flinger for my Fox 32 fork a while ago after reading American reviews....and found that it clogged with mud.

This is the kind of thing I should spend less of my life on. Why is this so difficult to make simple decisions? Does anyone have any recommendations.

The ass saver looks ridiculous but it is very effective.  On the HT tho, the long Mudhugger is the UglyGuard of choice.  It is a horrifically unpleasant piece of recycled plastic that is absolutely brilliant through any kind of filth. The new ones using velcro are a good upgrade.

For fronts if you're running Fox, I'd always recommend bolt ons. Both RRP and Mudhugger are good. I use MH as they sit a bit higher on the fork crown as the RRP was a bit close to the 2.6 Mary on the front of my HT.

Another vote for Ass Saver Win Win.

A black one is not TOO in your face.  It looks ok if level (hardtail) but really shite if off level ( full suss).

But does the job well for what it is.

The Mudhuggers are great and mine did rattle a bit. Now a Win Win fan.

The Win Win easy to remove quickly as well if a rare dry day!

Mudhugger for the best coverage. Ass Saver Win Wing MTB surprisingly effective.

I've got both on different bikes. Tried the Win Wing after having fitment issues with Mudhugger on a low seatstay FSer. Bonus of being able to remove and swap it between bikes quickly rather than have one mudguard per bike.

Ass Saver Win Wing MTB surprisingly effective

Been using the Win Wing on my XC full suspension for the last few months and its lovely whilst being quiet and no hassle to fit. Although do use the clear tape to protect your frame.

Win Wing if you want to take it on and off easily. Works reasonably well, but can be a bit flappy if properly hooning over the rocks or if its blowing a gale.

Mudhugger if you want to put it on it October, take it off in April and have a properly dry arse for that period.

I've always ridden guards on my bike and get endlessly ribbed for it.  Mudhugger is the only one I've had that's been effective on the back.  RRP or mud hugger on the front.

Mudhugger. As above the newer ones are Velcro attachment and a better idea.

My mudhugger is on its fifth winter with no bother apart from the faff of tie wrapping it on every autumn and even that’s not an issue now the new version uses Velcro

I wish RRP would do an actual proper rear guard to match their excellent front guards

SKS Mudrocker is decent, slightly less offensive than a Mudhugger. Soft-back velcro ties are bomb-proof and makes it easy to take on and off in seconds.

As so many others have suggested; Win Wing for my HT, Mudhugger for my FS.

I bought an Ass Saver, the basic one that is just a flap clipped under your seat.

It's about all I manage to bring myself to concede to rear mudguard-wise.

Anyway, I'm sure it helps when pedalling seated but I kind of forgot about the fact that I drop the seat for descents whereupon it becomes useless 😂

For the Mudhugger and the SKS I always wrap the seatstays in self amalgamating tape - stops any rubbing/paint damage.

Mudhugger - I adapted an original one to use with velcro, it's been rock solid for years...

Krampus mudgugger.jpg

SKS Mudrocker - again uses velcro, but more of a curve to it, and it has rubber wedges to bring the angle up or down (though I on very low seat stays like my Stooge it still sits a little high)...

Stooge SKS.jpg

Win Wing - works surprisingly well, and is very easy to swap onto other bikes. I'm not sure of the aesthetics, but it is solid in use and makes no noise...

I use a Mudhugger on my full-sus, it looks horrendous but works well. I had the previous version with cable ties but eventually broke it after too many cable ties fatigued and snapped. I tried the Velcro straps with the new one but they weren’t tight enough for hucking off things on my commute so it now has (I think) five chunky cable ties on each side.

My hardtail has no rear mudguard and looks lovely but makes for a wetter commute. For proper MTBing I’m fine without a rear guard, but I run a front one all the time.

Mudhugger on mine, it's done a few winters, down to about -20C without issue.

I recently put the mucky nutz one with the removable extension on my daughter's bike, not quite as good coverage, but much easier to get in the car with the extension removed.

Mudhugger for ugly, tough, and great protection.

AssSaver WinWing for way less ugly, less tough, and good protection.

Mucky Nutz for the serious late autumn and winter slop time. I've got the velcro attached one but find zip ties are better.

I'm really interested in the Win Wing MTB for the shoulder seasons as I run the gravel one on my Digger.

I got caught out at the weekend. After some sunshine I took the extension off and ran the shorty. Big mistake. I came back filthy.
