Thinner chainrings on 9 speed.
Totally reverse compatible, and in practice a 9 speed chain will work alright on 8 speed rings.

Chainrings are 9 or 8 speed specific. 9 speed chains being thinner so 9-speed chainrings being thinner to suit.

Your right.... an 8 speed will run 9 speed stuff with no issues.
