I'm getting leaks from the valve, when blowing the tyre up without sealant. This is with a stans 355 rim, stans yellow rim tape, and stans olympic valve.

Have I done something wrong, or is this normal (eg: will it fix itself when I put sealant in?)

That's happened to me - either you've not done the lockring up tight enough, or the removeable valve core isn't tight enough.

From valve core or around base?

Everything tight enough? I use pliers to tighten the valve nut.

Did the lockring/valve nut up with pliers, fairly tight. Is it possible to over tighten it?

Didnt stop the leaking though. Checked the valve core was tight as well.

Is weight saving the reason for no sealant?

Maybe try taking valve out, dipping rubber end in sealant and refitting.

No, I just dont want to get everything covered in sealant if its not going to work.

Maybe try making a gasket out of a bit of old inner tube.

when you put sealent in it will seal it, i was told not to overtighten the valve into the rim as the rubber will deform, and get nipped on the rim, only finger tight, have you looked at the valve rubber, is it damaged?

Yeah, I eventually gave up and just put the sealant in, and it sealed it fine.
