I've just bought new brakes for my genesis altitude 10 due to the old ones being shockingly garbage!

I ve just realised after removing the rear calliper and brake lever that the replacement lever is for the opposite side of the handle bars!!

Originally my left hand lever was for the rear and right hand for the front. Is this the normal way?

Does anyone else run their rear lever on the right hand side? When I bought the brakes from Chain reaction it just gave me front and rear options not left or right lever.

Cheers

John

Left hand rear, right hand front - yeah, that's normal (in the UK)!

What brakes did you buy? Swapping hoses over is usually straight forward. You would probably need to cut the hoses down a little anyway so might as well do that while swapping.

I learned the left-right thing the hard way after hiring a mini-DH rig in Luchon, France. First corner I went over the top into a ditch. Second corner same thing. I am not a quick learner.

My Shimano XT’s were set up non uk. Unbelievably easy to swap them over. Just level of the calliper on the bar, unscrew both hoses (the oil does not drip out) reattach after swapping over.

Jobs a good one.

I can't find a uk set-up set. Maybe I should try and swap them over. So uwe-r is it as easy as you make it sound? What do you mean by levelling off the calliper on the bar? Do you mean the brake lever?

Lots of videos on you tube and instructions on tint’r web for how to do it on a set of xt brakes. Try there first for the model you have.

While mine are a different model don’t see why this should be any different. By levelling of I mean I twist round the brake leaver on the bar so the point where the hose attaches is the highest point, do this to both leavers. Unscrew both hoses from the leavers and hold one of them up high while you swap over the other over and re-attach to its new leaver (an extra pair of hands helps). All the holding leavers up in the air is not really required as not a drop of fluid comes out when you do this although it is probably a good idea and you don’t want them scraping around on the floor.

I thought there was a good chance they would go soft and I would then be bleeding them but they have been fine. There was no noticeable difference in the braking power and I have done many happy miles on them since without needing a bleed.
