Let's word this right....what is the maximum distance in mm it is appropriate/safe to to have your stem above the steerer tube? 1 1/8th steerer, Sunline v1 am stem (if that makes a difference).

You mean the maximum gap between top of steerer and top of stem? Yeah, I'd say 5mm max but, for example, Thomson says 3mm. I wouldn't have the top of the steerer below the top of the upper stem bolt
Ok...that's exactly what I wanted to hear, just brought some Fox 36's with a steerer length of 170mm current stack is 175mm, have a FSA Pig headset stack height 30mm could save upto 10mm I believe with something lower but nothing wrong with it and would prefer not to spend extra wonga if I don't need too.
What do others run? Anyone run more than 5mm?
I'd guess any manufacturer limits are cautious...and any real limit will depend on each stem, and your weight/riding etc.
