I am on holiday with outlaws in taunton and reckon I can sneak off tomorrow...
Planning on going over to the quantocks. Where do I start/park? And is it all self guiding or do I need to plan a route?
Advice greatly appreciated.
DH or XC?
If DH- Triscome Stone CP is a good place to start I believe but I've not ridden any of the trails there.
If XC I tend to park at Triscombe Stone and ride northwest along the avenue of trees to Crowcombe Park Gate, another place I regularly park at. Both of these CPs are on the ridge, so you may finish your ride in a generally uphill direction depending upon route taken.
You could also park in Holford, at the village CP by the cricket pitch at the bottom of Hodder's Combe.
Nice cream teas are available in the hotel in Holford Combe but a bit pricy. Post ride, The Plough Inn in Holford is excellent nowadays.
Best routes are left for you to explore, but all the combes are great to descend.
Smith's Combe- great descent that is difficult to regain the ridge from in a sensible way.
My prefered returns to the ridge are Dog Pound track (AKA The Great Road), Lady's Edge, Lady's Coombe.
Thanks ambrose, any links to maps/routes?
Loads of *.mmo or *.gpx if you want. email in profile.
Can you use mmo files on a browser? I only have iPad with me...
I don't know.
I would have said start at Lydeard Hill car park if you're staying in Taunton, there's usually a ride starting from there around six, six thirty most evenings during the week. You could probably find someone to tag along with.
Lydeard Hill if you're coming from Taunton.. take a ride along the ridge and drop down into one of the many coombes at each side. fairly self explanatory to be honest and if you get a little lost just head back uphill to the top ridge..
ahem... emailed you a couple of routes.
Thanks for your help guys, had a really good few hours out there, got plenty lost but found some good bits it really is a good area. A little too steep and bumpy for my rigid singlespeed at times! But that is a good thing.
