Think about removing outer ring on my 9spd slx, anyone else done this if so what bash guard thanks
Mine had an E13 Turbocharger and then a Gamut. Both very nice- strong and light. But not cheap.
I've got a Race Face alu one on mine. Very strong but you can dent it if you hit it hard enough.
I have an E13 which looks a bit ugly as it's chunky and plastic. On my other bike I have a small 32t metal one that I bought from someone on here and it looks way better.
Did the same on my SLX. Started with an alloy race face light, looked nice and light & sporty but quickly started to look rather ... err ... well ... bashed. So replaced it with an E-13 turbo charger plastic one which I think looks real gnarly (sorry _tom_) and soaks up the punishment better. Which will suit you kinda depends on whether you'll actually be hitting it against things. Where I ride its regularly pinging off logs and rocks so I was better off with the more robust plastic kind.
The plastic ones do need longer chainring bolts, but my turbo charger from CRC came with them (as it damn well oughta at that price!)
One thing to watch out for - if you stay with the 32T middle, and use a 36T bash, you may get chain rubbing on inside edge of the bash when you're in the wee cogs at the back - at least I did. Solution is to get a smaller bash - 32T/34T - or space the larger one out with washers. I chose the 36T bash as I wanted the option to try a 36T chainring later - which I did, and never went back to the smaller one.
Yeah to be fair the E13 one does do a good job of taking hits and still looking new. The smaller metal one I have is full of scratches.
E13 Supercharger here 22/36
I like the look of the big chunky polycarbonate ones
Same as the above, E-13 big plastic fella.
Mine is in clear and i wouldn't mind swapping for black to match the look of the bike... so may do so.
I've got a Straitline Serrated bashring and it's great, really durable, you won't get many stronger than this. You don't need longer chainring bolts either.
Bizarrely my SLX Bash from my SLX double only fitted my SLX triple after copious amounts of filing.
Got an old style E13 turbocharger 2nd hand cheap which fitted my SLX cranks but needed to buy extra long bolts from Wiggle whch costs as much as the bash.
Best for me so far has been an MRP alloy bash also 2nd hand. Only a tenner and tough as old boots and fits with normal chainring bolts.
They are all well over priced new IMHO so got all mine off Pinkbike. There are plenty on there as I was looking last night but check if it needs extra long bolts and if so are they included as the extra long ones can cost.
CRC have a Sunline bash on offer at the moment with guide for £40
One other thing go for a bash for 36 tooth chainring rather than a 32 as it will be more verstaile if you ever up your middle ring from 32.
You may already know this but you will need to remove your cranks to fit so check you've got the right tools and I would advise you get a chainring bolt thigamjig to help undo and tighthen your chainring bolts because they can be a a bugger to do without.
thankyou everyone
Sorry to resurrect this one - but just wanted to retract what I said earlier about the plastic bash guards being able to "soak up the punishment better" than aluminium ones.
They might look tougher, but my E13 Turbocharger has cracked at all four bolt holes, after only a few clunks on logs, so its back to the aluminium ones for me...
Bolts, overtightening and washers spring to mind...... 😀
BBG aluminium, less than a tenner each inc. postage from the US.

Nah! I can confidently say that wasn't it - for two reasons...
First, there's a cylindrical metal insert in each of the bash guard's bolt holes, so you're tightening metal against metal, not compressing the plastic.
And second, I use a torque wrench anyway...
Leave the big ring on and pretend it's a bashguard......because it is

Yes, but its also a spinning sawtoothed leg lacerator!
I use a bash guard not only to protect the cranks from logs & rocks, but also to protect my flesh from the large chainring when I crash. Got one nice sawtooth shaped scar on my calf already...
I always use the smallest bashgaurd possible to get the max ground clearance.

No guarantee of correct bolt tension. When did you last calibrate it? What figure did you use to torque it. clean threads? Oiled? Coppaslipped?
A torque wrend needs to be used with care not relied on especially on small low torque bolts that are typical on a bicycle
I'm about to do this with my SLX cranks...
A 36T chainring is the best place to start. You'll lose the lower ranges of gearing, but then that's what the granny ring is for, right?
As for the bashring, I used a Race Face alu job for a while which looked ace for all of a fortnight. Plastic is the way to go. I haven't tried fitting a Shimano guard to a set of SLX triple cranks yet so I cannot comment on how much modification work is required.
I just ordered a Hope one from Dave hinde for £28 posted.

Brave man. I give 2:1 on that its not here in a month and you have had at least one pack of lies told to you
I'll be amazed if you receive it.

I have, and you need to file off about 1mm of the plastic at each arm of the crank spider for it to fit. Unfortunately this also negates the main benefit of the Shimano one - that it has thicker plastic around the mounting bolts, so you may as well use an aftermarket one, which doesn't need modifying, and looks better too!
I've tried a few combinations over the last six months, and have settled on a race-face ally lite on the converted triple on the hardtail which doesn't get bashed that often, and pucker M665 double with original Shimano plastic bash on the FS which takes a beating.
Race Face Aluminium one. Not the lightest but its very strong and looks good
Another RF one here with a 36t ring, the chain is just below the outer edge of the bash guard, works well...
