[Closed] Pulling out of SPD SL cleats/pedals

I had an almost crash yesterday on the way home from work. Part of my journey involves a right turn across a cross road, and if I'm quick enough usually I can beat the cars on the otherside of the crossing and make the corner.

Anyway yesterday as I was getting up to speed (pulling up and down as hard as I could), my left foot unclipped and somehow flew into my front wheel. I managed to stay on the bike and not get run over, but I buckled my wheel and have twisted/sprained my ankle.

So what I'm asking is should I have been able to pull my foot out? Do I just need to tighten up the mechanism on my pedals? The cleats are a month old and barely showing any wear on the yellow tabs (I only use the bike to commute 2miles each way a day).

Any suggestions as to what I should/could do to stop this painful and expensive mistake from happening again?

Stop trying to beat the traffic at a junction.

Walk. It's only 2 miles.

That will make it less likely to happen.

Were you properly clipped in?

Go careful on your commute today then...... try to avoid the temptation to elbow fellow commuters into the barriers if they get a little close.

It sounds to me that either you weren't actually fully clipped in properly or you twisted your foot enough while pulling up that you disengaged.

I'm going to assume that I was properly clipped in, it was my right foot that had been unclipped whilst I waited for the lights to change.

I guess it was some weird twisting on my left foot that may have caused the unclipping. I'll try a tightening the mechanism up one notch and hope that doesn't happen again.

I drove in today, made sure i punishment passed anyone on a bike dont worry.
