Good for garage, shed or [s]dungeon[/s]. 😯
I've got one of the ones from a previous sale at Aldi and it is a chunky piece of kit - not very portable - and has a lock/key similar to an Abus style.
cool. I have several of these. Two for the summer alloys and one for the [s]gimp[/s] commuting bikes. Nothing's gone missing yet.
stupid question from Mr thicky:
so, i can't buy one of these until Sunday, right?
Correct available from Sunday, Lidl however normally put their stuff out a couple of hours before closing on the day before so you can get it earlier.
Some nice bike stuff there in general, almost makes me want to keep mine
Got one myself but the lock mechanism broke, fortunately not whilst attached to my bikes. I've just got a (big) padlock on it now.
Well spotted. Been waiting for these to come in again.
Had one for few years now, & it's spot on.
For £8 these are great as a bit of a deterrent/warning in a shed/garage as well
Keep forgetting to turn mine off before I walk in, it's quite loud!
Contrary to what Muke says, don't go to Lidl in the hope that they may put them out early. Feel free to try Aldi though!
Are you sure you would feel happy using these to lock up your pride and joy?
I wasn't suggesting you go to Lidl to buy an Aldi product, I was just pointing out that Lidl put their specials out the night before and Aldi don't, sorry to of confused you.
They are good for the price. Heavy bit of kit. Well designed loop system. Not too long etc. However check the lock barrel's. I think these may be the same as ones I've had in the past. The barrel is seperated at two or three points. I had some eejit trying to pick mine and they'd knocked the internal barrel pieces out of synch in the process, and I struggled to get the original key back in. 10 anxious minutes on my knees, on a busy road, cursing and fiddling around and I got it in just - wouldn't want a repeat of that. On the positive it would be hard to break it free though and you could maybe get some similar but different locks, maybe. Just a heads up. The design may have changed though and the lock seems ok if it's galvanised/hardened as I think the chain may be too. Also you'd probably struggle to find a similar chain alone for that price. Should also be fine with just the original key used.
I bought two of these last year, when I realised how useful they were I went back and got another two!
You can arrange them like so:
Means you can lock a pile of bikes together, either just noosed around the end bikes, or through a ground anchor either end. I still lock my wife's full suss to mine with a 'premium' chain but the Aldi locks run through with the cheap bikes either side which just makes the heap a bit more unattractive to tackle.
Since taken one to work but might buy another two as they are bargain. If you want to use them like this, check the final link will slot through the link of the other chain, I did but one of my chains will only slide inside the other, not over. Some of the links wouldn't fit at all.
Now you're talking spooky. Great idea that.
I've also knocked the barrel out of sync after trying all four keys to my four locks in a spare padlock! Once I'd matched the other three to their padlocks it just took a bit of wiggling to get the correct key in...think I had to just keep turning the key as it went in. Didn't realise the barrel was split so makes sense now. I use different padlocks with it anyway.
Bought one of those today.
I was a little worried by the lack of the word "hardened" anywhere so I took a large metal chisel and lump hammer to the chain. The chisel was ruined after 1 hit and a bit of the zinc plating on the chain got scuffed. The chain's hardened.
I bought one last time around too, use it when the bikes are on the bike rack, a guy i Know also had one when his garage was broken into, the lock was smashed quite easily apparently, and his mtbs went the journey, so might be worth investing in a superior lock to go with the chain!
Do be realistic about those, like most other chains a thief with the right kit will go through it in near-silence, faster than you can undo it with the key. OTOH, since so many people don't bother to secure their bikes, it's probably quite likely that if a thief does visit you they don't have the right kit- and in that case, paying £10 for one will be a huge bargain.
(on the other other hand, you could easily spend £100 on a chain from a "quality brand" and get something that's no more effective)
Got a couple for a friend, today (Thanks for your tip-off elsewhere, spooky_b329) and they seem fairly decent for a tenner.
Can anybody suggest a suitable replacement padlock, if the supplied ones are so suspect?

That's a new take on kerb crawling.
Northwind, you normally talk sense but, if thAt last post was meant to be advice, have a word with yourself 😆
"They're not that good, but they're quite good, but a more expensive one is better but an expensive one might not be better"
That's not what I said! They're not very good, but not very good is often all you need because "not very good" is still a little better than "nothing at all". It's like swimming with sharks, you don't need to be faster than teh shark, you just need to be faster than the next guy 😉
And lots of more expensive brands are no better, so you end up spending 10 times more, for no improvement.
Good products are available, though, so if it's important to you that your bike is actually secure, get one of those. Pragmasis or Almax or whatever else has come along in the meantime, I'm out of date.
All locks can be broken and all you are doing is making it harder, is essentially what Northwind is saying.
Blatant thievery is easier than you may think and a Stihl saw will chomp through anything. The only thing comparable to the thieves blatant actions is the apathy of the public.
I'm with northwind on this. I bought it to go along with my Oxford Hardcore xl, abus & hardened chain for my motorbikes. It's to slow them and down and get bored. This chain might buy me 30seconds, or if I can place the lock away from the floor (to avoid hammer attacks), even longer.
