I have got a soft-shell waterproof which has been very good but is ready for a wash and reproof. In the past I have used a specialist soft-shell proofer but I have run out and it is expensive. I do have some Nikwax wash-in waterproofer which I use on shell garments. Basically , will it work or should I just buy the specialist product?
I would just use TX Direct.
If it’s something you wear next to the skin (like a Buffalo) then only use a spray proofing on the outside (like TX Direct spray), otherwise I’d use the wash in - TX Direct works well and doesn’t have any nasty chemicals in.

As much as I rate Nikwax proofing products, I do wonder if there's much (any?) difference between some of them!
What is the outer material?
I thought the whole point of soft shells is that they are only shower proof due to the material used ie a nicer softer material than a harder erm waterproof
i`ve never had any success proofing at home.
i`ve tried loads of times and methods. i take mine to johnsons now.

Yeah, that's why I asked the question about the outer material. Most are just water resistant, but do you get items described as 'waterproof softshell' (at which point are they softshell anymore?).
Then there's Paramo, which is basically a soft shell with a 'pump liner'. Not technically waterproof, but sold as such as in practice it usually keeps you dry.

Since we switched to only using washing liquid, not powder, and usually non-biological natural detergent stuff, I've found it easy. But before then there was a lot more faff making sure there was no detergent residue in the machine which would mess up the process.
It is one of the heavier Madison soft-shells, can't remember actual model name.It has kept dry through 8 hours of rain previously but hasn't been as effective lately hence the reproof.
I have been thinking of getting a Paramo Velez Light which actually is the same weight as the Ciclo and should be more useful for general outdoor stuff. Also I know reproofing works with Paramo as I have a heavy walking waterproof which is years old and still responds to a bit of Nikwax. Only for the real cold though, too hot otherwise .
I use the Velez adventure light smock for hiking/trekking, and it's great, as long as it's close to freezing. I bought another for biking, but didn't find it works that well, as the fit was a bit baggy (not something that bothers me when walking). The lightweight outer is also not very robust. I now have a spare one from hiking, for when the current one dies.
For the Madison softshell, I'd expect Nikwax would recommend their specific soft shell proof, but I'd just try the TX direct if you already have some. After all, that's (TX direct) what they recommend for paramo, which is closer to a softshell than a traditional hard shell.
