[Closed] problems with hope pro 2 and maxle lite

Hello
Just interested to see if anyone else is having any problems. My bike is 6 weeks old and I have just had to replace the rear hub because the hub axle snapped in half. Hope have replaced this on warrenty but said unless i change the tapered maxle lite to an older straight maxle they will not cover the problem again. My previous bike did have the straight maxle but the hub failed on that one after 6 months use. Are hope pro 2 rear hubs crap or are these isolated cases?

many thanks

It is because the Maxle lite tapers in the centre and doesnt support the Pro II axle at its weakest point. Many cases if you search around on here and MTBR forums.

For what it is worth, I replaced my rear Maxle with a solid axle from BETD - the "Intense" axle:

http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/items.asp?CategoryID=185&Name=12mm+axle's

And have had no further problems, and as a bonus also noticed less play in the rear bearings, think the solid axle nips up tighter than the Maxle.

Good luck...

nowthen

snapped mine too, maxle lite as well. Replaced hub after fixing with a hope bulb, quieter and stronger axle design. Also convertable same as pro 2

Should be fine, it just screws right in places of the maxle, the 135mm fits perfectly. I have it on my Marin Wolfridge, but all Maxle dropouts should be standard size.

Also, when I asked BETD the same question before I bought it, they told me a LOT of people are buying them to replace Maxle Lites...

Phone up BETD, they'll sort you out.
I've got one of their axles rather than the maxle that came with my Orange Alpine. I'd read the threads on here but not actually broken the axle in my Pro2, I just didn't want it to break on this summer's trip to the alps.

Having said that, there were 4 other bikes in the same chalet with rear Maxles and Pro2s, and no one had any problems.

It's not an isolated case and it's something us at BETD have found with lots of the Hope Pro 2's. Call us on Monday and we will sort you out no problem.

Megatron, is it the Goldtec Intense axle you're using on your Alpine? Would like to try and avoid it happening again too.

I think so. It looks just like the one nowthen linked to.
I gave BETD a call, explained what I wanted to do and said that others on here had mentioned that they had a fix for it. They took some of my money, and I had a shiny new axle in the post the day after!

You just need to remember to take around a 5mm allen key with you!
