I have got a problem with my avid elixir cr brake levers. The lever can be push forward away from the the bars and when pushed forward they stay in this position until pulled back.
I'm finding that when i'm riding i some time accidently knock them out or sometimes if i release the lever sharply they flick out. This them in a position that is hard to reach and takes my concentration away from the trail.
My brother inlaws elixir r's also can be pushed forward ,but my elixir r's that i bought at the same time and are on another bike do not push and lock forward, which is much better and doesnot cause a problem.
Why do they do this and can I stop them doing this?

That's it, it's meant to happen to stop damage I think. If they're doing it really easiy then there is a little rubber bit on the lever, inside the body, that gets worn. You can replace that. That happened on my Codes.

As Doug says. The ability to push them out is a designed 'feature', but it should require a firm and deliberate push to this position, and a firm/deliberate push back to the normal riding position. If it's doing it on it's own or too easily then the 'cup' in which the push rod sits has worn...

The ball-end of the pushrod from the lever sits in a little plastic cup, the cup has a cut away to allow the push rod shaft to click in and out. On a new pair this is the clicking sound/feel when you push the lever out. The cut away depends on being slightly smaller than the shaft so as to get that nice positive click and also to hold it in place...either outside the cup(extended position) or in (normal riding position). But the nylon can wear and the cut away stretches so it doesn't hold the position very well. You can take the lever apart and nip the nylon to a more closed position again with pliers or similar. I've done this and returns them to work functionally but the original clicky sensation is lost.

Alternative is to replace the cup with a new one. I did this too but from a spare lever I'd bought from ebay, not sure if you can buy the cups without buying the full new lever rebuild kit...

Sorry if this is long winded, but hope it helps.
