Trying to refit a Hollowtech II and driveside it wont go all the way through to the other, gets stuck about 3/4 inch short. I am assuming it goes flush up to the bottom bracket?
I tried it from the other side and it gets stuck at same place.
The shaft's finish is corroded and peeling, I wonder if that is the problem and needs sanding maybe?
Any advice appreciated.
Usually needs the use of a rubber persuader to get it fully home. Get yer mallet out and give it a tap or two
where is the corrosion? where the bearing sits?
HTII cranks always need a knock with a rubber mallet.
How much force is needed? When it wouldnt go any further it took some serious hits with the hammer from the other side to free it.
Corrosion is all along the shaft, flaking metal finish etc.
Is it a new BB ? On initial fitting its always very tight. Just use a mallet and tap away. Cant imagine the flaking would prevent the fitting unless its very very bad.
sounds like too much force is needed.
have a look on youtube at some videos of crank fitting, should get an idea.
I've had cranks where you can just use the heel of your palm to knock it in, others have taken maybe 3 liberal swings of a rubber mallet.
never seen HT2 cranks corrode so not sure how to resolve that, would probably just smooth the finish as long as they're not too pitted.
Same chainset and bottom bracket from old frame on a new frame.
If I remember it did take some force to remove from old frame but seems excessive, surely cant need so much force? As said above I would agree a firm push with hand would be enough.
